Prior to turning professional, Shine played four seasons at Northern Michigan University from 2013 to 2017, tallying 97 points (48 goals and 49 assists) in 131 games and serving as alternate captain in his final two seasons. He earned All-WCHA Second Team honors as a junior and All-WCHA Third Team as a senior, leading the conference with 20 goals in his last season.

Before college, Shine spent several years with the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League, putting up 134 points and 503 penalty minutes in 188 games while acting as team captain in his last two seasons. Born in Pinckney, Michigan, Shine grew up playing in the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey program in the Metro Detroit area.
