The San Jose Sharks have recalled defenseman Nolan Allan from their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda, signaling an opportunity to evaluate his potential at the NHL level. This move comes after the Sharks acquired Allan earlier this season from the Chicago Blackhawks as part of the trade involving Laurent Brossoit’s contract.
Allan’s Career Path and Recent Performance
Selected 32nd overall in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft by Chicago, the 22-year-old blueliner has shown glimpses of promise but has yet to establish a consistent impact in the NHL. Last season, Allan appeared in 43 games for the Blackhawks, tallying eight points while averaging just over 15 minutes per game, and contributing defensively with 48 blocks and 61 hits.
Despite this, he was sent to the AHL following training camp this season and remained there aside from a brief appearance representing Canada at the Spengler Cup in December. Chicago’s depth on defense made it feasible for them to include Allan in the trade to San Jose.
Improved Production with the Barracuda Leads to Recall
Prior to the trade, Allan had recorded two goals and four assists in 29 games with the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago’s AHL team. Since joining the Barracuda, his offensive output has increased significantly, with two goals and eight assists in only 20 games, which has earned him this call-up. With his entry-level contract expiring at season’s end, this recall offers a chance to showcase his abilities at the NHL level.
Roster Changes and What Comes Next for Allan
Allan’s promotion fills the roster spot vacated by Timothy Liljegren, who was traded to Washington at the trade deadline. The Sharks now carry seven healthy defensemen on their active roster, making it uncertain when Allan will officially make his NHL debut for San Jose. Additionally, this recall counts toward the Sharks’ limited post-deadline recall allowance.
The team’s decision to bring Allan back reflects their interest in assessing their defensive depth and may influence their lineup and contract decisions going forward as the season progresses.
