Jack Draper ATP Comeback: Wins in Dubai, Eyes Ranking Surge

Jack Draper has marked his return to the ATP Tour with a win at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, aiming to boost his ranking during a pivotal period of the season. The British No. 1 had been sidelined from regular competition since July, after his loss to Marin Cilic, and did not play on tour following his withdrawal from the US Open in August due to an arm injury.

Despite limited match play, Draper demonstrated resilience by overcoming France’s qualifier Quentin Halys in straight sets, 7-6(8) 6-3, in a first-round encounter. The victory was especially significant given Draper’s recent struggles with bone bruising in his right arm, which had previously forced him to skip the Rotterdam Open as he prioritized recovery.

Details of the Comeback Match and Recent Competitions

In the match against Halys, Draper saved three set points to secure a tense first set lasting just over an hour. He then gained clear control in the second set to close out the win. Earlier this month, Draper also participated in the Davis Cup, winning a match for Great Britain, but remained cautious to avoid aggravating his arm injury by pulling out of the following Rotterdam Open.

“It feels so good, honestly. To be out here, to be competing in front of people,”

he said.

“I had a tough opponent today, I think he was tricky, he served great and it could’ve been a bit cleaner from my side, but I haven’t played in a long time on the tour so really proud of the way I came out today. Hopefully I can keep going from strength-to-strength here and staying on court.”

He also shared how much he missed the experience of competing:

“I’ve been craving the feeling of competing for a very long time. It just felt normal, it felt like I was coming back to doing what I love, which is being out here, competing and having the adrenaline of winning and losing points.”

On overcoming the challenges over recent months, Draper noted,

“A lot of people have helped me to get back to this position after a lot of down moments (over) the last eight months, it’s not been easy to be back here and that’s something I can be really proud of. Long may it continue.”

Outlook: What’s Next for Draper’s Season

This victory in Dubai provides a hopeful foundation as Draper looks ahead to important tournaments that could significantly affect his ATP ranking. His cautious approach to recovery paired with strong performances will be closely watched as he attempts to build momentum and challenge top players such as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Maintaining fitness while regaining form will be crucial during this critical stretch in his career comeback.
