Jack Draper’s Bold ATP Comeback Shines with New Look Win

Jack Draper made a striking return to ATP Tour tennis on Monday evening at the Dubai Tennis Championships, defeating French opponent Quentin Halys 7-6 (10-8), 6-3. The British number one’s comeback came after a lengthy absence from the tour due to a persistent left arm injury, underscoring his resilience and renewed determination as he embarks on a new chapter in his career.

Fresh Appearance Marks Draper’s Return

At 24 years old, Draper stepped onto the court with a noticeable new buzz cut hairstyle, signaling a fresh start after months away from competitive play. Despite the pressure of his first match back, the British player demonstrated impressive focus and grit to secure the victory in his Dubai debut.

A Hard-Fought Match Demonstrates Draper’s Grit

The match against Quentin Halys was far from straightforward, featuring a tension-filled opening set. Draper faced two set points while serving at 5-4 in the first set but showed remarkable composure to fend them off and push the set into a tiebreaker. Even when trailing 7-8 in the breaker, Draper rallied to win the next three points consecutively, clinching the set. The second set went more comfortably for Draper after he broke Halys’ serve in the fourth game to establish a 3-1 lead. From that point, Draper held serve solidly, finishing with an 86% first serve win rate and delivering 13 aces.

Draper Opens Up About Returning to Competition

Following the match, Draper expressed profound relief and joy at resuming tournament play, highlighting the emotional weight of the comeback.

“It feels so good, honestly to be out here, competing in front of people,”

he shared.

“I suppose I’ve been craving the feeling of competing for a very long time. It felt normal, it felt like I was coming back to doing what I love, which is competing, having the adrenaline of winning and losing points.”

He also extended gratitude toward those who helped him during his difficult recovery.

“A lot of people have helped me get back to this position after a lot of down moments in the last eight months, it hasn’t been easy to get back here, it’s something I can be really proud of and long may it continue.”

Injury Challenges That Delayed Draper’s Career Progress

Draper’s setback began during the clay-court season last April, when bone bruising in his service arm resulted in significant discomfort. This issue gradually worsened, forcing him to withdraw after only one match at last August’s US Open and to miss January’s Australian Open to focus on recovery. His progress was stalled as a result of these complications.

Past Success Highlights Draper’s Potential

Before injury interrupted his momentum, Draper was enjoying a breakthrough period in 2025. He notably won the Indian Wells Masters 1,000 tournament and reached the fourth round at the Australian and French Opens. He had climbed to a career-high ATP ranking of fourth last June but has since dropped to 15th during his absence.

Upcoming Match in Dubai and Future Prospects

Looking ahead at the Dubai Tennis Championships, Draper is set to face either Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan or France’s Arthur Rinderknech in his next round. This return represents a pivotal point for Draper as he aims to regain his standing in the ATP rankings and build on the promising signs shown in this comeback.

Draper’s resilience and refreshed mindset, exemplified by his victory and new appearance, suggest a positive outlook for his career moving forward, inspiring optimism among fans and the tennis community alike.
