Jack Draper Shines in ATP Return as Auger-Aliassime Wins

At the Dubai Duty Free ATP500 Tennis Championships, which kicked off today, top-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jack Draper both secured victories to move into the tournament’s next round. Draper’s win marked a significant moment as it was his first ATP match in six months, making his comeback highly anticipated. Throughout the event, Draper’s return and Auger-Aliassime’s steady performance captured attention, underscoring their determination to progress in this competitive environment.

Auger-Aliassime Holds Firm in Tight Match Against Zhizhen Zhang

Felix Auger-Aliassime, seeded first, delivered a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 victory over China’s Zhizhen Zhang in a match that stretched close to two hours. He secured an early break in the opening set but encountered strong resistance from Zhang in the second, facing six match points before the tie-break. Auger-Aliassime’s resilience under pressure was evident throughout, culminating in a tense final set. After his win, he took time to engage with the crowd, signing numerous autographs before leaving the court.

I stopped counting [the matchpoints] at some point, it was getting too frustrating,

said Auger-Aliassime.

Having match points is the position you want to be in as a player, but it’s weird how the mind plays a trick on you. How much further I am from losing than he is, he should be the one that’s tight. But I told myself ‘If there is a third set, I’ll be there’.

Draper Demonstrates Growth Despite Early Match Rust

Jack Draper, returning after an extended absence, showed glimpses of rustiness during the early stages of his match against Quentin Halys, a player who had advanced through qualifying rounds. Draper grappled with multiple breakpoints on his serve but gradually gained control, ultimately winning 7-6, 6-3. At a critical moment when he was trailing 4-5, Draper held his serve after three deuce points, then fought off his opponent’s pressure before prevailing in a marathon tie-break 10-8.

It feels so good. Honestly, to be out here, to be competing in front of people, at a top opponent today, I think he was tricky, so great, and it could have been a bit cleaner from my side, but I haven’t played in there in a long time on the tour, so, really proud of the way it came out today, and hopefully, I can just keep on going. It felt like I was coming back to doing what I love, which is getting being out here, competing, and having that adrenaline of the winning and losing points.

Draper reflected on his return to the court.

Adjustments to Serve Play During Time Away From Tour

During his recovery period, Draper focused extensively on modifying his service mechanics to enhance consistency and reduce strain. This strategic adjustment aimed to manage injuries that had interrupted his progress in 2023, including a pec injury and recent bone stress. Draper explained that while his serve had always been strong, increasing its reliability was key to regaining peak performance.

My serve was always a good shot, but it could have been more consistent over time,

Draper said.

It’s something I looked at in terms of not only certain mechanics in the way that I’m maybe putting some stress on my arm. In 2023, I had an injury in my pec, and obviously, recently I had the bone stress, so I’m always looking at myself to see how I can get better. Maybe it’s helping myself in the long run, because my serve is more certain than ever in the past, and I have to get my arm back to being 100%.

Players Inspire Young Athletes in Pre-Tournament Session

In the days before the tournament began, Draper joined Auger-Aliassime in an unplanned visit to the stadium to motivate emerging players. Their session involved on-court drills and training, combined with sharing personal insights from their careers to encourage young tennis enthusiasts. This event highlighted both players’ willingness to give back to the sport and nurture its next generation.

I think it’s really amazing to give back, especially to young players,

Draper shared.

I remember when I was much younger and how inspiring it was to be around players like Andy Murray.

Additional Notable Match Outcomes at Dubai

Elsewhere in the tournament, Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka secured a 7-5, 6-3 win over Lebanon’s Benjamin Hassan, demonstrating his enduring competitive edge. Also, Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard battled through an intense match against Moez Echargui that featured three tie-break sets, ultimately prevailing 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. These matches added to the early excitement of the event, signaling closely contested competition ahead.

Significance of Draper’s Return and What Lies Ahead

Jack Draper’s successful return to ATP competition after a prolonged absence is a crucial milestone both for his career and British tennis. Overcoming physical challenges and fine-tuning his serve, Draper looks poised to regain momentum and contend effectively in future tournaments. Meanwhile, Auger-Aliassime’s steady performance under pressure keeps him in a strong position within this event. As the Dubai Duty Free ATP500 progresses, fans and analysts will watch closely to see how these players capitalize on their wins and handle greater challenges ahead.
