Jack Draper’s Serve Adjustment Eases Injury Worries

Jack Draper made a triumphant comeback to the ATP Tour on Monday by beating Quentin Halys at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The British number one saved two set points before clinching a 7-6, 6-4 win in the United Arab Emirates, marking an important step after months away due to injury. Draper will next face either Arthur Rinderknech or Fabian Marozsan as he continues his recovery and quest for ranking improvement.

Serving Technique Changes Help Draper’s Progress

Draper, who missed most of the 2025 season because of a left-arm injury, revealed that serving adjustments have played a key role in his recent form. Speaking with Sky Sports right after his Dubai victory, Draper explained that while his serve was always a solid shot, he has aimed to make it more consistent and less stressful on his arm.

He noted,

“Firstly, my serve was always a good shot, but it could’ve been more consistent over time, and it’s something I looked at in terms of not only my serve mechanics in the way that I’m maybe putting some stress on my arm.”

Draper also discussed how injuries, including a pec issue in 2023 and a more recent bone stress injury, have forced him to reconsider his approach.

“And it’s more serving than I’ve ever done in the past because I have to get my arm back to being 100 per cent, and that takes time,”

he said.

Match Statistics Highlight Draper’s Serve Efficiency

During the match against Halys, Draper demonstrated the benefits of his refined serve by hitting 13 aces and only committing one double fault, with a first-serve percentage of 69%. He won 86% of points on his first serve and 62% on his second, showing strong control despite limited time on court since his injury.

However, Draper seeks to improve his efficiency at converting break points, as he managed only one successful break out of five chances. This potential area for growth indicates his focus on fine-tuning all aspects of his game as he returns to full competitive fitness.

This victory in Dubai represents only Draper’s second match win since recovering, following his straight-sets win over Norway’s Viktor Durasovic in the Davis Cup earlier this month (6-2, 6-2).

Potential Upcoming Opponents and Past Encounters

Draper could next face either French player Arthur Rinderknech or Hungarian Fabian Marozsan in Dubai. Draper holds a prior ATP Tour win against Rinderknech, having defeated him 6-3, 6-4 at the 2022 Paris Masters during his debut appearance. Rinderknech has gained notable attention recently due to his impressive run to the Shanghai Masters final, where he fell to Valentin Vacherot.

As for Marozsan, he and Draper have never met in professional competition, adding an element of uncertainty to the potential matchup.

Challenges Behind Draper’s Injury Setbacks

Draper’s progress has been slowed by multiple injuries, including the left-arm bone stress injury that sidelined him for most of 2025. This series of setbacks raises questions about what factors contributed to his physical difficulties, although Draper himself remains focused on continual improvement and injury prevention.

Following his win over Rinderknech in 2022, Draper lost to Frances Tiafoe in the subsequent round at the Paris Masters, going down 3-6, 5-7. These ups and downs have shaped Draper’s journey as he strives to reach his full potential on the ATP Tour.

The Road Ahead for Jack Draper

With his serve adjustments paying early dividends and his confidence growing through match wins in Dubai and Davis Cup, Draper is cautiously optimistic about his future on the ATP Tour. His experience battling injuries has made him more aware of his physical limits and the importance of sustaining durability.

As Draper prepares for the next rounds in Dubai, a continued focus on consistency, break-point conversion, and managing his injury will be vital. His progress has captured the attention of fans and analysts alike, who are eager to see how far the British youngster can rise by the end of 2026.
