Top Rival Claims Carlos Alcaraz Is No Longer Unbeatable

Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive form by defeating two top 20 players en route to securing the Qatar Open title. Among them was Andrey Rublev, who suggested in a recent interview that the World No. 1 may no longer be as invincible as in the past. Alcaraz stretched his winning streak over Rublev to four matches, improving their head-to-head record to 5-1 with a 7-6(3), 6-4 win in the Qatar semifinal.

In an interview with MARCA ahead of the Dubai ATP 500, Rublev expressed a sense of progress and optimism after their latest encounter, stating he felt more competitive than ever against Alcaraz on the baseline.

“I learned a lot. The first is that I’m on the right track. It’s the first match where I felt competitive playing against him from the baseline,” he said.

Improved Competitiveness Marks a Shift in Rublev’s Performance

During previous matches, including his win in the 2024 Madrid Masters quarterfinals, Rublev believed outcomes hinged on either Alcaraz underperforming or himself delivering brief moments of exceptional tennis. However, the Doha semifinal felt distinctly different. Rublev noted his ability to maintain pace and intensity over long rallies, an aspect that usually favored Alcaraz, but which he managed to counter effectively this time.

“The Doha match was completely different. It’s true that he played well, without doing anything incredible, but I was able to compete on equal terms from the baseline. I felt like I could keep up with his pace, his power, his intensity… And it’s the first time I’ve noticed that with Alcaraz on the other side of the net,” Rublev added.

Despite the progress, Rublev acknowledged that winning against Alcaraz still comes down to the smaller details, where the World No. 1 consistently holds the edge.

“To beat him, it’s also a matter of details that he does better than I do,” Rublev said.

Rublev Challenges the Myth of Alcaraz’s Invincibility

When specifically asked if he once considered Alcaraz unbeatable, Rublev shifted the focus, emphasizing that the Spaniard’s dominance stems from his match wins, but stressing a personal drive to overcome him.

“I think it’s more of a question for him because he’s the one winning the matches. My feeling is that I want to beat him. And that I want to be competitive enough to win titles. You can’t get it into your head that he’s invincible,” Rublev stated.

Carlos Alcaraz’s Stunning 2026 Season and Upcoming Schedule

Alcaraz has delivered remarkable results in 2026, capturing two titles from two tournaments so far. His Australian Open triumph featured victories over Top 10 opponents such as Alex de Minaur, Alexander Zverev, and Novak Djokovic. In Qatar, he added another title by overcoming Karen Khachanov, Andrey Rublev, and Arthur Fils.

The World No. 1 has announced he will skip the Dubai ATP 500, setting his sights on the upcoming Indian Wells event, where he hopes to continue his strong momentum and dominance on the tour.

Implications of Rublev’s Progress and Alcaraz’s Form

Rublev’s evolving competitiveness signals a potential shift in the dynamic at the top of men’s tennis, suggesting challenges to Carlos Alcaraz’s previously perceived unbeatable status. While Alcaraz’s form remains exceptional, Rublev’s ability to push him harder than before reflects growing resilience among his peers. This may lead to increasingly intense rivalries as the season unfolds, with Indian Wells expected to be a critical test of Alcaraz’s continued supremacy.
