David Malukas: From Injury to IndyCar Legacy with Penske

David Malukas was on the brink of fulfilling his dream when disaster struck less than a month before his scheduled IndyCar debut with Arrow McLaren. On February 11, 2024, while out mountain biking—a fitness activity he enjoyed in the off-season—Malukas suffered a severe fall that resulted in a dislocated left wrist and torn ligaments, casting doubt on his future in racing. This injury halted his momentum just 28 days before the season opener in St. Petersburg and triggered a chain of events that changed the trajectory of his career.

Once a rising star ready to compete for IndyCar championships and the coveted Indianapolis 500, the 22-year-old found himself released by Arrow McLaren by May 2024, stripped of his place in top-level competition and forced into uncertainty. The injury didn’t merely sideline him physically but left him grappling with the mental toll of an unclear recovery timeline and an unknown fate in motorsport.

Struggles and Resilience Amidst Setbacks

Rather than retreating during this difficult period, Malukas chose to stay close to the sport. Despite missing out on racing, he remained engaged with IndyCar by joining its content creation team during the Month of May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This role allowed him to maintain his presence within the IndyCar community while watching other drivers compete on the world’s most famous stage, even if it was a painful experience.

“It was a tough mental period of my life,”

Malukas reflected.

“With the injury, it was a lot of unknowns on how I was going to recover, if it would recover. So just trying to deal with all that, it was tough for me to try to figure out, battle the thoughts in my mind. It was a lot of sad days.”

Malukas’ motivation to stay visible within IndyCar was clear:

“Hey, well I’ve got to get my face out there. I just want to be a part of IndyCar in any way possible. And if I’m not in the car, then I’m going to just do content, do media, be on the broadcast. I just love the sport so I want to be connected and be there.”

Although this role provided a needed distraction, it also served as a reminder of what he had lost and stirred fears that his racing career might never recover. Yet even in those dark moments, a spark of hope remained as he quietly nurtured the possibility that his time on track had not yet ended.

The Unexpected Opportunity and Return to Racing

Approximately fifteen months after his injury, Malukas’ situation transformed dramatically. Meyer Shank Racing (MSR), unhappy with rookie driver Tom Blomqvist‘s early performance, decided to make a mid-season change after the 2024 Indianapolis 500. Mike Shank, team owner, targeted Malukas as the ideal replacement, despite his ongoing recovery.

In the interim, racing legend Hélio Castroneves filled the seat for two races, bridging the gap until Malukas was deemed ready to return at the June race at Laguna Seca. Prior to this, Malukas had already demonstrated his readiness at a test session at the Milwaukee Mile. Though still operating below full fitness, Malukas immediately made an impact, qualifying in the Fast 12 and finishing third on the starting grid at his Mid-Ohio debut, followed by consistent top-12 starts on subsequent tracks including ovals.

“Being at the Indy 500 and doing all that content, the reasoning for that was to show myself out there, keep seeing my face,”

Malukas explained.

“And I think it definitely helped because Shank gave me that miracle ride to go out there and show who I am and give me an opportunity. Everything happens for a reason. And that was one.”

This return not only revived Malukas’ career but also laid the groundwork for further advancement. Despite only two top-10 finishes that season and still contending with his injured wrist, he earned the chance to continue developing his skills and fitness, including a follow-up surgery to address scar tissue.

Joining AJ Foyt Racing and the Penske Alliance

As the 2024 season concluded, Malukas announced a move to AJ Foyt Racing for 2025. This transition came with strong speculation about Team Penske’s influence due to Foyt’s alliance with Penske and the visible presence of Penske sponsors on Malukas’ No.4 car throughout the year. Malukas’ performances—most notably an average qualifying position of third and a runner-up finish at the Indy 500—ignited buzz about a potential future with Penske’s prestigious outfit.

Throughout these developments, Malukas maintained focus and composure. Although rumored to be in discussions with Penske, nothing was confirmed until an unexpectedly momentous phone call in Portland.

The timing was symbolic—right after Penske driver Will Power ended a 15-race winless streak, Malukas was informed of the offer to join the team.

“I remember it was leaving the track, all in the car and I get the phone call from The Captain [Roger Penske],”

Malukas recalled.

“There’s talks back and forth but I got the official call at Portland. He starts talking, he’s like: ‘Hey, you’ve got the offer to join the team.’

“And so I mute and I’m super pumped up. After he said that, I did not understand anything he was saying. I muted, I’m screaming, all excited. And then I unmute when he stops talking and I’m just: ‘Thank you Roger very much for the opportunity.’ I’m trying to act all serious.”

“I was super ecstatic when I got that call, man. It’s a dream come true.”

An Emerging Legacy With Team Penske

More than six weeks after the phone call, Malukas was officially unveiled as a Penske driver, marking a pivotal moment in his IndyCar career at only 24 years old. Given Penske’s record 17 IndyCar championships, this appointment represents a major step forward.

Remarkably, Malukas acknowledges that his 2024 struggles may have ultimately positioned him better for this opportunity.

“It’s pretty crazy to look back and think about everything that’s happened and how I’ve ended up here,”

he admitted.

“If you would have told me back [at the] 2024 Indy 500, I was just doing content with IndyCar. I was doing TikToks. I was having a good time; I loved working with that media crew. But man, I’m doing TikToks in Turn 2 at the 500.

And then fast forward two years and now I’m signing with Team Penske. If you would tell me back then, I wouldn’t be able to believe it.”

Despite this accomplishment, Malukas steps into an immense legacy to fill. He replaces Will Power, a two-time series champion and former Indy 500 winner with 42 of his 45 career wins secured at Penske, making him the fourth all-time in IndyCar victories. Power also holds the record for most qualifying poles, with 71 at Penske.

Yet Malukas is determined to forge his own path rather than follow in Power’s footsteps.

“I’m going into it as: this is going to be my own legacy, my own name,”

Malukas stated.

“It’s Verizon No.12 Team Penske Chevrolet with David Malukas. This is going to be my path. It’s different times, different drivers and it’s a different world today. So I’m going to be doing my own path. I have my own goals and my own dreams and my own aspirations of being written across history and doing that with Team Penske.

And as long as I can go to bed each night and say I gave it my all and I tried my best, then that’s the only way I’ll be happy.”

While the pressure of expectations at Penske is immense, Malukas has developed the mental toughness to face challenges head-on. He credits his injury ordeal as a crucible that sharpened his resilience and matured his mindset.

“It really changed my mind on the way everything is in life,”

he reflected.

“Everything happens for a reason. All that stuff that’s happened with the injury and having to deal with all that, I think it mentally prepared me for me being here today at Team Penske. A lot of it was dealing with hardships. But I think it was all necessary. I was able to learn a lot from it and it really changed my mindset and made me mature and made me push forward and motivate me and have discipline on [the fact] there’s goals that I want to achieve and I’ve got to do everything that I can to get that and nothing’s really going to stop me.

If there’s any problem that comes up to me now, I always have this mindset that I can find a solution to any problem. Because after that, nothing’s going to be as tough of a problem as what was 2024. So hit me with anything you’ve got and I’ll be able to find a solution for it.”

Prepared and Poised for Penske’s Challenges Ahead

Malukas feels well-supported by Team Penske’s extensive resources and values the growth gained from his earlier stints with Dale Coyne Racing, Arrow McLaren, Meyer Shank Racing, and AJ Foyt Racing. This varied experience has helped him adapt quickly to new environments—an asset as he joins one of motorsport’s most demanding teams.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season opener at St. Petersburg, where Penske drivers historically perform well, Malukas emphasizes consistency and a strong start to the year as crucial goals.

“Consistency is always going to be very important,”

he said.

“The main thing is to be getting off to a strong start. Unfortunately I have a lot of experience of joining new teams in the past few years; I’ve joined pretty much half the grid almost with teams so I’m very comfortable with it. But I know the priorities of what it takes.

And learning from all of that, from the previous teams, I can get to a better jumpstart on this year because it does take some time to get acquainted with the team, the crew, the car and understanding everything.

So for this season, especially with Team Penske, obviously the car, the people that they are, the team that they are and the drivers that they have… St. Pete is a very good race for them so I think we have a good chance to be on a better jumpstart than I have with previous teams so we can get back to being up there and getting results quicker.”

With this mindset, Malukas is ready to take on the challenges and opportunities at Penske, carrying the hard-earned resolve that has brought him back from the edge of a career-ending injury to the cusp of making history.

A Future Written with Determination and Opportunity

David Malukas’ journey from a devastating injury to joining Team Penske encapsulates not only the resilience and grit required to succeed in high-level motorsports but also the power of perseverance in the face of uncertainty. After standing on the brink of an unthinkable end to his racing career in early 2024, Malukas has reestablished himself as a prominent figure in IndyCar, now carrying the hopes of one of the sport’s most historically successful teams.

As he embarks on this next chapter, Malukas is focused on building his own legacy, motivated by past adversity and driven by the promise of what lies ahead. His story is a testament to overcoming hardship and seizing opportunity, illustrating that sometimes the path to greatness emerges from the darkest of times.
