Hunter McElrea made an unexpected return to IndyCar by testing with Ed Carpenter Racing at Sebring Raceway. During Tuesday morning’s session, McElrea impressed by posting the sixth fastest time amid a split field.
Ed Carpenter Racing’s Current Lineup and Plans
For the upcoming season, Ed Carpenter Racing plans to have Alexander Rossi, a former Indianapolis 500 winner, and Christian Rasmussen compete full-time. Team owner Ed Carpenter is set for his 23rd Indianapolis 500 attempt in a one-off entry.
Other Drivers Testing and McElrea’s Background
Will Power, now with Andretti Global, continued adapting to his new team alongside fellow Australians Marcus Armstrong, Scott Dixon, and Scott McLaughlin. McElrea, son of Australian Porsche team owner Andy McElrea, previously made a single IndyCar start with Dale Coyne Racing in 2024 at Toronto.
McElrea’s Racing Career Before Returning
Before returning to IndyCar, McElrea raced two seasons in Indy NXT for Andretti Autosport, securing four wins. He also triumphed in earlier Road to Indy series such as Indy Pro 2000 and US F2000. His earlier career highlights include winning the 2018 Australian Formula Ford Series with Sonic Motor Racing Services.
Experience in Sports Car Racing
Born in the US, raised partly on Australia’s Gold Coast, and holding New Zealand ties, McElrea has been active in IMSA’s SportsCar Championship’s LMP2 class. Racing with TDS Racing in 2024 and 2025, he achieved class wins at prestigious events including Indianapolis and Petit Le Mans. This year began with him competing in the Daytona 24 Hours for United Autosports.
Looking Ahead to the IndyCar Season
The 2024 IndyCar season is scheduled to start on March 1 at St. Petersburg, where McElrea’s surprise return may open new opportunities for the driver and Ed Carpenter Racing in the competitive field.
