Alex Palou Praises Kyle Larson’s NASCAR Versatility Ahead of Crossover

Four-time IndyCar champion Alex Palou recently expressed admiration for NASCAR champion Kyle Larson’s ability to compete across various motorsport platforms, highlighting Larson’s remarkable adaptability. Palou, who is keen to replicate Larson’s versatility, shared his views on the challenges of racing in NASCAR during a recent interview.

Kyle Larson, a leading figure at Hendrick Motorsport, regularly participates in multiple racing series, including NASCAR and Midget car competitions, and made his IndyCar debut a few years ago. Larson’s attempts at ambitious challenges like the double feature—the Coca-Cola 600 and the Indianapolis 500 in 2024 and 2025—showed promise but ultimately ended disappointingly.

Due to the logistical difficulties, Larson decided against participating in the double in 2026. Despite this, he demonstrated impressive speed on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s IndyCar oval, qualifying fifth in 2024 and leading laps during the race. Beyond NASCAR and IndyCar, Larson consistently races midget cars and is a three-time winner of the Chili Bowl Nationals, considered the pinnacle of Midget racing.

During an appearance on the Speed Freaks YouTube channel, Palou was asked if he could match Larson’s quick transition to stock car racing. He said,

“I don’t know. I guess we’ll find out. I think the talent that he has is amazing. The ability he has to jump from a car to another car and be fast that quick is very impressive. I don’t think it would be that quick, but, yeah, maybe someday hopefully we can find out and be as competitive as he is,” said Alex Palou (6:50 onwards)

The interviewer pointed out that some former IndyCar drivers struggled when switching to NASCAR, prompting Palou to praise Larson’s skill further.

“I think I would struggle a lot. I think the way the cars are like how they handle, how they race, I think I would struggle. Like it’s not something that I think would be easy. I think I would struggle a lot. The fact that you have people like Kyle going from NASCAR to IndyCar, I think it’s probably a tougher even tougher move. So, yeah, pretty impressive. He’s one of the best drivers in the world,” added Alex Palou

Palou Shares First Impressions after Phoenix Raceway Open Test Ahead of Upcoming IndyCar-NASCAR Event

The planned crossover event between IndyCar and NASCAR, backed in part by FOX’s recent acquisition of a third of Penske Entertainment, aims to bring both series to the Phoenix Raceway on the same weekend. This initiative hopes to broaden fan engagement by introducing each series’ audience to the other.

Alex Palou and other IndyCar drivers recently participated in an open test at Phoenix Raceway as preparation for the 2026 season. When asked about his first impressions of the track, Palou commented,

“The track itself was a lot more fun than I thought as well. I did it on the sim. I watch NASCAR races and I watch like the old IndyCar races here and I felt like yeah kind of maybe they work for our car or for our driving uh style. Let’s say. But it was a lot of fun. Like you can really drive hard. You can hustle the car, which I love. I love when you’re like forcing the car to go fast and you’re like steering and you’re like feeling those forces. Um, so a lot of fun.”

The Phoenix Raceway event is scheduled for the weekend of March 7, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two racing series.

Significance of Palou’s Remarks and the IndyCar-NASCAR Partnership

Alex Palou’s acknowledgment of Kyle Larson’s multifaceted driving skills not only underscores Larson’s status as one of the world’s most adaptable racers but also highlights the growing mingling between major motorsport disciplines. Palou’s willingness to test NASCAR’s demands reflects the increasing interest among top IndyCar drivers in exploring stock car competition.

The upcoming crossover race at Phoenix Raceway represents a strategic effort to combine fanbases and showcase driver talent across different vehicles and formats. Palou’s positive reaction to the track and his candid reflections on the challenges ahead set an anticipatory tone for what could become an annual highlight, facilitating richer competition and broader exposure for both series.

As preparations continue, monitoring drivers like Palou and Larson will be key to understanding how versatility in motorsports evolves, potentially inspiring future crossover talents and shaping the path for motorsport integration worldwide.
