Christian Lundgaard Dominates Saturday IndyCar Practice Run

The NTT IndyCar Series held its second practice session of the weekend on Saturday morning at the St. Petersburg street circuit. Christian Lundgaard led the session by clocking the fastest lap of the day, completing the 1.8-mile course in 61.6157 seconds while running on the harder tire compound.

Details on Performance and Track Conditions

Unlike many drivers who refrained from using alternate tires due to damp track conditions, Lundgaard managed to post his best time on harder tires. Marcus Armstrong followed closely in second place, with reigning series champion Alex Palou securing third. Nolan Siegel set the pace in terms of distance covered, completing 28 laps for Arrow McLaren, generating valuable data for his team.

Track Challenges and Incidents During the Session

The track remained slick from overnight rain, prompting several competitors to hesitate before venturing out when the session began. Will Power was the first to experience difficulties, understeering into the barriers at Turn 10 during his initial lap. Christian Rasmussen was the next driver to crash at Turn 2 after losing rear traction while accelerating through the corner.

Rasmussen’s car struck the wall head-on, triggering the safety structures designed to absorb impact. Caio Collet also suffered a crash with his AJ Foyt Racing Chevy, although his vehicle sustained only minor damage. As the practice continued and the circuit dried, lap times improved steadily toward the end of the session.

What to Expect Moving Forward This Weekend

Following a pause to accommodate the NASCAR Truck Series race, the drivers will return to the track for qualifying at 4:35 PM Eastern time. The data and times from this session, especially those recorded by Lundgaard and his closest rivals, set the stage for an intriguing qualifying round and competitive race ahead in St. Petersburg.
