Christian Lundgaard, competing for Arrow McLaren, delivered a solid performance in the opening race of the 2026 IndyCar season but expressed frustration at being unable to pass his teammate Pato O’Ward earlier. Lundgaard, starting four positions behind O’Ward, quickly closed the gap and remained closely behind him through much of the race.
Matching Strategies and Intense On-Track Duels
Throughout the first two-thirds of the race, Lundgaard and O’Ward executed similar race strategies, which kept the two papaya-colored cars side by side on the track. This close proximity prevented Lundgaard from attempting an earlier overtake until O’Ward experienced a momentary hold-up behind Marcus Ericsson on lap 66. Taking advantage of this opening, Lundgaard made an aggressive pass to move into third place.
Lundgaard’s Aggressive Move Secures Podium Finish
After overtaking O’Ward, Lundgaard managed to pull away and maintain his position until the checkered flag, finishing third. Reflecting on the experience, Lundgaard shared,
“Yeah, I think I was behind him [O’Ward] for a good 20 laps when I started getting annoyed of seeing the back of his car,”
underscoring his impatience during the lengthy pursuit. He added,
“Then once the pit sequence started, some of the three-stoppers were holding us up at that point, and I got around him, which was around the Ericsson part.”
The Danish driver also highlighted the challenge of passing Ericsson, stating,
“Ericsson fought hard to try to keep that position. I had to fight to get by him. I had to be very aggressive to get by him, which was very nice.”
Once clear, Lundgaard noted the advantage it provided, saying,
“It gave me some clean air to catch up to Scottie [McLaughlin] at that point, but ultimately, I think our cars are good, and I think we will be in the hunt this year.”
Aiming Higher After Strong Momentum from Previous Season
Last season, Lundgaard achieved six podium finishes and concluded the championship in fifth place, although he is still searching for a second career victory following his 2023 win in Toronto. As he begins his second year with Arrow McLaren, Lundgaard appears motivated and confident, particularly as he anticipates racing on two circuits he has yet to experience.
