Alex Palou’s Shocking Phoenix Crash Shakes IndyCar Standings

NTT IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou faced an unexpected setback on Saturday at Phoenix Raceway after a dramatic crash during the race. This incident has jeopardized his position atop the season standings, putting his championship defense in question.

Details of the Collision on the One-Mile Track

The crash happened following a caution caused by Dennis Hauger spinning out. When the green flag resumed, competitors aggressively battled for position on the 1-mile oval. Palou was running in the middle of the track but began drifting upward as Rinus Veekay moved to challenge him on the outside.

The two drivers made contact, forcing Palou’s car into the outside wall. He stayed stuck against the wall briefly while Veekay continued with damage to his No. 76 car’s left front section. Palou then slid down to the apron with his right front wheel housing severely damaged.

Race and Standings Impact from the Crash

Starting 10th, Palou had advanced through the field with several overtakes, but the crash relegated him to 24th place, ahead of only Romain Grosjean, who did not start due to mechanical failure. Palou reflected on the incident after the race:

“I don’t know, I haven’t been able to see it,”

he admitted.

“I don’t know if I squeezed someone or someone was trying to get there. I mean, I didn’t think there was anybody there. Need to see if there was really that space or not, but unfortunate that we ended up in the wall so early.”

Palou’s Recent Performance and Championship Implications

Palou, a four-time NTT IndyCar Series champion, dominated much of last season with eight wins, capturing the title comfortably. He extended his momentum by winning the season opener at St. Petersburg, leading 59 of 100 laps. After that victory, Palou held an 11-point lead over Scott McLaughlin heading into the Phoenix event.

Saturday’s crash erased much of that advantage, opening the door for other drivers to close the gap in the championship standings. With crucial points at stake, the Phoenix incident marks a significant turning point in this season’s title race.
