Alex Palou’s 100th IndyCar Start Ends in Early Crash

Alex Palou’s attempt to make a significant impact in his 100th IndyCar start at the Good Ranchers 250 in Phoenix Raceway was cut short due to an early crash. The four-time IndyCar Series champion collided with Rinus VeeKay after just 22 laps, ending his race prematurely and raising concerns about the unfolding competition.

Early Race Progress and Incident Details

Starting 10th on the grid, Palou quickly advanced into the top three positions shortly after the green flag, settling behind Team Penske drivers pole-sitter David Malukas and Josef Newgarden. However, the dynamic changed following a brief caution and restart on Lap 19. Palou was overtaken by Graham Rahal and soon engaged in a battle with VeeKay through the dogleg section of the 1-mile tri-oval track.

As VeeKay attempted a pass on the high line, the two drivers made contact, resulting in Palou’s right-front tire striking the outside wall. His vehicle came to rest inside the track with serious damage that forced him to exit the race early. Palou’s #10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda was unable to continue due to the crash impact.

Reactions from Drivers Involved

Reflecting on the incident, Palou admitted uncertainty about how the collision occurred.

“I haven’t been able to see it,”

Palou said, discussing the replay.

“I just, I don’t know if I just squeezed someone or someone was trying to get there. Yeah, I mean, I don’t know. I didn’t think there was anybody there. (I) need to see if there was really that space or not, but yeah, unfortunate that we ended up in the wall so early and not even trying, but it’s racing.”

Meanwhile, VeeKay continued the race but was visibly frustrated, believing Palou forced him into the collision.

“He drove up on me, man,”

VeeKay expressed via radio communications. He also reported probable damage to his suspension, which affected his steering and left him several laps behind in 23rd place by the time of the race update.

“Yeah, steering up to the left. I think it’s got suspension damage here.”

Impact on Championship and Team Standings

This early incident disrupted Palou’s bid to reinforce his championship credentials, especially in a competitive field featuring strong performances from Team Penske alongside Chip Ganassi Racing. Phoenix Raceway’s fast-paced 1-mile tri-oval track continues to challenge drivers with close racing and high risks, as seen in this clash between two prominent contenders.

With drivers like David Malukas and Josef Newgarden holding top positions during the race, and others such as Graham Rahal making strategic moves, the competition remains tight. Palou’s crash not only marks a frustrating moment in his milestone IndyCar start but also reshuffles the dynamics of the Good Ranchers 250, setting the tone for upcoming rounds in the season.

As the teams assess damage and prepare for future events, the significance of this crash underscores the fine margins in IndyCar racing, where split-second decisions can drastically alter outcomes. Fans and teams alike will be watching closely to see how Palou and VeeKay recover from this setback in the races ahead.
