Framber Valdez Joins Tigers with $115M, 3-Year Deal

Free agent left-hander Framber Valdez has reached a $115 million, three-year contract agreement with the Detroit Tigers, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday night. Although the deal had not been publicly announced at the time, this move marks a significant addition to the Tigers’ pitching roster.

Valdez, a durable and accomplished pitcher, is expected to strengthen the Tigers’ rotation, joining alongside two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, who is currently involved in a record-setting salary arbitration hearing with Detroit.

Background and Career Highlights of Framber Valdez

Valdez made his major league debut in 2018 with the Houston Astros, where he developed into one of baseball’s most reliable starters over multiple seasons. Known for his consistency and stamina, Valdez has averaged more than 191 innings pitched over the last four years, a feat matched only by San Francisco Giants’ right-hander Logan Webb during the same period.

During the 2024 season, Valdez recorded a 15-7 win-loss record with an impressive 2.91 earned run average (ERA) across 28 games. He has been selected to the All-Star team twice and was a key member of Houston’s 2022 World Series championship squad. In that championship run, Valdez was the winning pitcher in the clinching Game 6 against the Philadelphia Phillies, finishing the series with a 2-0 record and a 1.46 ERA over 12⅓ innings pitched.

His overall Major League statistics include an 81-52 record and a 3.36 ERA through his career, with 187 strikeouts and 68 walks over 192 innings pitched in the previous season. Valdez started the last four season openers for Houston and is notable for throwing a no-hitter against Cleveland on August 1, 2023. He nearly repeated the feat again a year later against Texas before Corey Seager’s ninth-inning homer ended the perfect game bid.

Contract Details, Arbitration, and Draft Implications

Valdez declined a $22,025,000 qualifying offer from the Astros in November, making him a free agent eligible to sign with other clubs. As a result, Houston will receive a compensatory draft pick after the fourth round of the 2026 amateur draft if Valdez completes the three-year deal with Detroit. Conversely, the Tigers will forfeit their third-highest draft selection as part of the signing.

The signing represents a pivotal moment for Detroit, aiming to capitalize on Valdez’s reliability and experience as they enhance their pitching depth with younger talents like Skubal, who is currently negotiating his contract through arbitration after requesting $32 million compared to the Tigers’ $19 million offer.

Notable Moments and On-Field Incidents

Throughout his recent seasons, Valdez has experienced both remarkable achievements and unusual episodes. In September 2023, shortly after conceding a grand slam to Trent Grisham during a loss to the New York Yankees, Valdez unintentionally hit his catcher, César Salazar, in the chest with a 92.8 mph sinker. The pitch came moments after Grisham’s homer in a game that ended 7-1. Both Valdez and Salazar asserted that the pitch was not intentional.

Joe Espada, manager of the Astros, confirmed the situation was fully resolved, stating he wanted to

“get past this and get back to baseball,”

following his meetings with both players.

Valdez’s Role and Future Impact on Detroit’s Rotation

As Detroit’s newest ace, Framber Valdez brings extensive postseason experience, having appeared in 17 playoff games, including 16 starts, with an 8-4 record and a 4.34 ERA. His presence is expected to enhance the Tigers’ competitiveness, offering a steady left-handed option to complement their core pitching staff. The signing highlights the team’s commitment to building a stronger rotation capable of postseason contention in coming years.

With Valdez joining Skubal and other starters, the Tigers aim to bolster their rotation and improve their overall pitching performance as they navigate upcoming seasons.
