Michael Wacha, a Pleasant Grove graduate and pitcher for the Kansas City Royals, has been selected to represent Team USA in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The tournament will begin on March 4 in Houston, Texas, where Team USA will compete in Pool B at Daikin Park, aiming to reclaim the global baseball title.
Kansas City Royals’ Leaders on the U.S. Roster
Wacha joins fellow Royals teammate Bobby Witt Jr. on the United States roster, alongside prominent MLB stars such as Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Witt had earlier declared his participation, and both players are set to showcase their talents on the international stage. Wacha, 34, has been an important figure for the Royals since joining before the 2024 season, maintaining a reliable presence in the starting rotation with a 3.61 ERA in 60 starts.
Wacha’s Role and Contributions to the Royals
Last year, Wacha emerged as a vital clubhouse leader, guiding younger pitchers with his calmness and veteran insight. His durability was a highlight as well, pitching 172 2/3 innings in the 2025 season, marking the second-highest single-season workload of his major league career. This combination of experience and steadiness makes him a natural pick for Team USA’s pitching staff.
Veteran MLB Players Completing the Lineup
Besides Wacha and Witt, the U.S. roster boasts other seasoned veterans such as Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, Joe Ryan of the Minnesota Twins, Logan Webb from the San Francisco Giants, and Garrett Whitlock of the Boston Red Sox. Wacha will be one of two Royals starters to participate, joining Seth Lugo, who will represent Puerto Rico. The presence of these accomplished players adds depth to the American squad heading into the competition.
International Representation from Royals and Others
Several Royals teammates will appear for other national teams in the Classic. Vinnie Pasquantino and Jac Caglianone are set to play for Italy, Salvador Perez and Maikel Garcia will represent Venezuela, and Carlos Estévez will pitch for the Dominican Republic. This creates the possibility of competitive matchups between American and Royals-affiliated players, particularly when Team USA faces Italy on March 10 during pool play.
Looking Ahead: Team USA’s Championship Aspirations
Following their loss to Japan in the 2023 WBC final, Team USA is hopeful to secure its second World Baseball Classic championship, the first since its 2017 victory in Los Angeles. With a talented roster featuring both established and emerging stars, the Americans are expected to be strong contenders in this internationally celebrated tournament, as they prepare for round-robin play and the eventual championship bracket.
