Tigers Sign Konnor Pilkington to Minor League Deal With MLB Invite

The Detroit Tigers have secured left-handed pitcher Konnor Pilkington on a minor league deal that includes an invitation to Major League Baseball‘s Spring Training. Pilkington, 28, who appeared in 32 games for the Washington Nationals last season, elected free agency after being designated for assignment recently. According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, the contract could be worth $1.2 million if Pilkington earns a spot on the Tigers’ major league roster.

Performance and Career Trajectory of Pilkington in Recent MLB Seasons

During his only season with the Nationals, Pilkington pitched 28 1/3 innings with a 4.45 ERA. While he achieved a personal best strikeout rate of 27.6%, his walk rate rose to 13.8%, continuing a trend of elevated walk percentages throughout his three MLB seasons, all above 12%. Pilkington initially debuted with the Cleveland Guardians in 2022, making 15 appearances—11 of them starts—with an ERA below 4.00. Yet, his advanced metrics like xFIP and SIERA suggested performance struggles, showing marks more than a run higher than his ERA.

After limited playing time the following year, appearing in only one game for Cleveland, Pilkington was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash considerations but did not make a major league appearance with Arizona. Before the 2025 season, the Washington Nationals signed him to a minor league contract, eventually promoting him in July to serve full-time as a reliever.

Transition to the Bullpen and Pitching Adjustments

The move from starting pitcher to reliever brought notable changes to Pilkington’s pitching style. His fastball velocity rose by over 2 miles per hour during relief appearances, and he increased his reliance on his slider, which generated a remarkable 46.3% whiff rate. This shift helped Pilkington refine his arsenal, positioning him to compete for a bullpen role with the Detroit Tigers as he continues to adapt his skills at the major league level.

Outlook for Pilkington’s Role with Detroit

By signing Pilkington to a minor league deal with an MLB spring training invitation, the Tigers are adding a left-handed option to their pitching depth. His ability to miss bats as a reliever combined with his previous starting experience gives Detroit flexibility in how they might utilize him during the upcoming season. Pilkington’s success in carving out a bullpen spot could influence the Tigers’ pitching staff dynamics and provide additional veteran presence with MLB experience.
