Oneil Cruz has begun spring training with a clear focus on addressing his difficulties facing left-handed pitchers, a major setback from his 2025 season. The Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder voluntarily challenged himself to bat against newly acquired left-handed reliever Mason Montgomery as part of his efforts to improve.
Manager Don Kelly confirmed Cruz’s proactive approach, noting that the player specifically requested these matchups to sharpen his skills.
“He’s challenging himself; he wants to get better,”
Kelly said.
“He’s working his tail off every day: outfield, hitting, everything to be better.”
Last Season’s Struggles Highlight Challenges Against Left-Handed Pitching
After showing promise early in his career, Cruz’s performance declined notably in 2025. Despite continuing to hit hard when making contact, his overall batting line slipped to .200/.298/.378, with a high strikeout rate of 32 percent. His issues were especially pronounced against southpaws, hitting only 11-for-108 while striking out 44 times and posting a .400 OPS.
These difficulties resulted in reduced playing time during late-season games against left-handed starters. If Cruz does not improve dramatically, he risks being relegated to a platoon role this year since the Pirates have bolstered their outfield depth.
Increased Competition and Additional Defensive Improvements Needed
The outfield features tougher competition this season with the additions of right-handed hitter Jhostynxon Garcia and switch-hitter Jake Mangum. Moreover, free agent signing Marcell Ozuna is expected to secure the designated hitter role during matchups against left-handed pitching, further pressuring Cruz’s playing time.
Beyond batting improvements, Cruz also faces challenges defensively. In his first year as a center fielder, he recorded minus-14 defensive runs saved, indicating significant room for growth in his glove work.
Guidance From Veteran Teammate Offers Hope for Rebound
Cruz has been training alongside four-time Gold Glove winner Kevin Kiermaier, who recently praised Cruz’s athleticism while emphasizing the importance of mental focus. Kiermaier described the 27-year-old as an “athletic freak” who could excel if he can maintain concentration.
This partnership signals the Pirates’ investment in Cruz’s potential, aiming to help him overcome last year’s shortcomings and realize the promise he showed earlier in his career.
What Cruz’s Progress Means for the Pirates Moving Forward
How Cruz responds to these challenges will likely shape his role on the Pirates this season. Success in improving his performance against lefties and sharpening his defense could secure him a more regular spot in the lineup, while continued struggles might limit his opportunities. Given the team’s recent roster additions and strategic signings, Cruz’s development remains crucial for Pittsburgh’s hopes to strengthen its outfield and overall competitiveness in the coming year.
Asked Don Kelly about this matchup. Kelly said Oneil Cruz specifically asked to face lefties like Mason Montgomery.
