Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Alex Vesia faced a deeply personal loss last year that kept him off the World Series roster just before the championship against the Toronto Blue Jays began. Vesia and his wife, Kayla, tragically lost their newborn daughter, Sterling Sol, which cast a shadow over what was otherwise a celebratory moment for the team. Earlier this week, as the Dodgers held their pitchers and catchers report, Vesia returned to the clubhouse and spoke publicly for the first time since the heartbreaking event.
Vesia Shares Emotional Reflections on His Daughter
In an emotional six-minute statement to reporters, Vesia described the profound impact his daughter’s brief life had on him and his family.
“The lessons we’ve learned from this is that life can change in an instant,”
he said, holding back tears.
“For us, 10 minutes is all it took. Sterling Sol was the most beautiful girl in the world. We got to hold her, change her diaper, read to her, and love her. Our time together was far too short … I was not prepared to not bring my baby girl home, but we’re carrying her with us every day.”
He also requested privacy as he and Kayla continue healing.
“Kayla and I will keep those precious moments and memories to ourselves. I hope that anyone listening can empathize and respect our wishes for privacy as we continue to heal and as we navigate the ups and downs of a baseball season.”
Gratitude for Support from Team and Opponents
Vesia expressed deep appreciation for the Dodgers organization and the extended support he and his wife have received throughout this difficult period.
“We are beyond grateful to be a part of this organization and this family,”
he said.
“So many of you have stepped up and have been there for us in a big way over the past few months, and it has meant the world to both Kayla and I.”
He also recounted how the grieving process was aided by counseling and the kindness shown by multiple organizations, including the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Rams. Notably, during the World Series, every Blue Jays player wore a patch with Vesia’s No. 51, a gesture that touched him deeply. Vesia explained,

“When Kayla and I were watching the World Series, we noticed that there was 51 on Louis Varland’s hat. I immediately texted Gus Varland, his brother, and I asked him if I was seeing that correctly. He texted me back right away, and he said, ‘the Varland’s love you, dude, the whole Toronto bullpen has it too. It’s bigger than baseball. We love y’all.’”
Challenges Ahead as Season Progresses
Vesia’s return marks a significant moment both for him personally and for the Dodgers organization. Though his grief remains present, he is preparing to face the mental and emotional challenges that lie ahead during the baseball season. His candidness about the tragedy and the support he has received sheds light on the human side of professional sports, emphasizing resilience amid hardship.
As the season unfolds, all eyes remain on how Vesia balances his role on the pitching staff while coping with the pain of his loss. His statements signal the importance of community within the highly competitive environment of Major League Baseball and remind fans and teammates alike of the profound personal stories that often remain unseen.
