First baseman Pete Alonso began a new chapter this spring after leaving the New York Mets to join the Baltimore Orioles on a five-year contract. In his debut for Baltimore during the Spring Training opener, Alonso hit a two-run homer that secured a 2-0 win over the New York Yankees, signaling his bright start with the Orioles and his embrace of the Pete Alonso Orioles uniform.
Alonso Embraces Baltimore’s Colors in Winning Start
After years spent wearing the blue and orange of the Mets, Alonso now sports the Orioles’ black, white, and orange colors. Following his game-winning home run, Alonso told reporters,
“I think orange is my color,”
according to team beat reporter Matt Weyrich. The switch in uniforms comes as Alonso aims to help the Orioles break back into postseason contention.
Orioles Make Bold Changes to Aim for Playoff Return
The Orioles underwent significant roster changes during the offseason, seeking to build a team capable of competing in the postseason. New manager Craig Albernaz was hired alongside Alonso’s high-profile signing. General Manager Mike Elias also strengthened the squad by trading for outfielder Taylor Ward, as well as acquiring pitchers Chris Bassitt and Shane Baz to bolster the starting rotation. Additionally, Ryan Helsley was brought in to take over the closer role, and other roster moves reinforced the bullpen and bench depth.
Despite the promising additions, the Orioles face some early challenges. Second baseman Jackson Holliday suffered a broken hamate bone that will sideline him at the start of the season. However, recent trade acquisition Blaze Alexander is expected to temporarily fill the void. Whether Alonso, Albernaz, and the new players can revitalize Baltimore’s lineup and pitching staff remains to be seen, but the hope is that these offseason moves result in a playoff push that makes the team’s efforts worthwhile.
