One of Major League Baseball’s standout pitchers recently called on the Atlanta Braves to sign veteran hurler Lucas Giolito, emphasizing the team’s current need for proven starters. Despite finishing the 2025 season with a disappointing 76-86 record, the Braves are gearing up for a strong 2026 campaign, supported by key players such as Ronald Acuna Jr., who many expect to be an MVP contender again. Veteran additions like Ha-Seong Kim and All-Star closer Robert Suarez, alongside Spencer Strider‘s return from surgery, have raised expectations for Atlanta’s pitching rotation.
Pitching Injuries Force Braves to Seek Reinforcements for Rotation
The Braves planned to rely on Spencer Strider and ace Chris Sale as rotation leaders, but recent developments have complicated those plans. Hurston Waldrep and Spencer Schwellenbach are both expected to miss significant time in 2026 due to elbow surgeries, prompting the Braves to explore free agency to fill the void. Lucas Giolito, a former All-Star with nine years of experience, has emerged as a viable target because of his strong 2025 performance with the Boston Red Sox after recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Garrett Crochet Endorses Giolito as Ideal Fit for Braves
Giolito’s availability as spring training begins surprised many, but fellow pitcher Garrett Crochet believes the Braves represent an ideal landing spot for the 31-year-old right-hander.
“It just doesn’t make a ton of sense. It’s just been that way for a while, though,”
Crochet said when asked why Giolito remains unsigned. He elaborated,
“The middle of the market on both the position player and pitching side kind of gets screwed and ends up either signing after the season begins or what have you.”
Crochet stressed the value of experience over unproven talent in filling rotation gaps, adding,
“… A lot of guys never figure it out here. The guys that have, they’ve stayed around, in the past, for a reason. I don’t think that just because we’re getting super analytical, we should look at it any differently. When you look at depth, you’re looking at guys who are experienced and have done it, not guys who can do it. That’s not depth. That’s just another prospect.”
Last season, Giolito posted a 10-4 record with a 3.41 ERA and totaled 121 strikeouts across 145 innings pitched, demonstrating effectiveness post-recovery.
Atlanta Braves Poised to Strengthen Rotation with Strategic Signing
The Braves’ pursuit of Lucas Giolito underscores the urgency to repair their pitching roster after recent setbacks. Adding a seasoned arm like Giolito could stabilize the rotation and provide veteran leadership alongside Strider and Sale. As the free-agent market shifts quickly this spring, Atlanta’s next roster moves will significantly impact their competitive outlook for 2026. Securing Giolito may well be a key step in their quest to return to postseason contention.
