“Felt good to receive that invitation and be able to kind of clear the air. There was some news out there, stuff that I couldn’t control that I wasn’t really happy with out there, but it was good to be able to clear the air at that dinner.”
Hazen acknowledged the public nature of the trade discussions, apologizing for the way Marte’s potential move became so widely known, while underlining that he was simply fulfilling his duties as general manager.
Marte reported early for spring training and notably had the first at-bat of the Cactus League games, signaling his readiness to lead on the field. His young son, Keyden, has been involved around the training fields, showing promise that Marte believes is “in his blood.”

“He’s a gentle giant, so we have to make sure that we’re continuing to cultivate this relationship with him, and making sure that he realizes how important he is to this organization and this community and this town and this state.”
Managing general partner Ken Kendrick also weighed in, noting the importance of seriously considering trade offers but expressing confidence that Marte would remain in Arizona for the foreseeable future.

Ketel Marte Sets Sights on Winning a Gold Glove Award
Among Marte’s priorities for the season is achieving a coveted Gold Glove, a distinction he has not yet earned. He revealed his commitment to improving defensively and acknowledged the impact new teammate Nolan Arenado could have on his game. Marte said,
“I’ve been working on my defense. I need a Gold Glove. (Nolan Arenado) is gonna help me to win the Gold Glove, and we’re gonna be better with Nolan out there. Our infield is gonna be better, for sure.”
Arenado, a ten-time Gold Glove winner, brings a wealth of experience that Marte aims to learn from as the team focuses on strengthening its infield. Marte narrowly missed winning the award in 2024 when he was a finalist, posting 10 defensive runs saved (DRS) and eight outs above average (OAA), but last season his defensive metrics dipped to one DRS and one OAA. The Diamondbacks are counting on intensified training this spring to help Marte and the infield elevate their performance during the regular season.

The Diamondbacks also confronted a controversy involving Marte’s missed playing time near the 2025 All-Star break. Kendrick referenced this period when he said Marte acted
“less mature than I would have wished.”
Marte has since apologized, and the organization has emphasized learning from the experience. Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo took steps to calm tensions during the clubhouse turmoil by publicly defending Marte, interrupting a postgame press conference to address the issue directly.
Perdomo described the situation as a learning moment and reassured that Marte is now in a positive place mentally, stating,
“Like I said, we probably don’t see anything like this before, but we move on from there and he’s in happy place right now. … In that moment, I just liked to put everything down because we were playing really good baseball. They make a big fire around the clubhouse. … It’s nothing like personal. It’s just, we came here to win.”
Regarding clubhouse management, Hazen indicated that many unseen dynamics play out over a 162-game season, with the manager’s role crucial in maintaining team cohesion.
“There’s a decision-making process, and that’s important, but getting these guys ready to play and play together for 183 straight days … all those things go into the manager’s job,”
he explained.
“There’s a lot at stake for us, and (Marte’s) a great baseball player and we’re fortunate to have great baseball players on this team.”
