David Fry Praises Guardians’ Support After Tough 2025 Season

David Fry faced a challenging 2025 season with the Cleveland Guardians, marked by injuries and a season-ending incident in September. Despite these setbacks, Fry expresses deep gratitude toward the Guardians organization for their unwavering support during this difficult period as he prepares for spring training.

Guardians’ Response to Fry’s Injury and Family Care

During a game against the Detroit Tigers, Fry was struck in the face by a pitch from Tarik Skubal while attempting to bunt, forcing him off the field for the rest of the season. At the time, Fry’s wife was near the end of her pregnancy, and his family faced emotional challenges, including his eldest daughter potentially missing her birthday celebration. The Guardians, led by manager Stephen Vogt and the front office, stepped up to support Fry’s family, organizing a birthday party for his daughter to ensure she could still celebrate despite the circumstances.

Fry shared his appreciation for his teammates and the organization, stating,

“Our guys are so awesome, the entire clubhouse. Just the way our team took care of me and our family. It just shows how good the people are that we have running things here,”

highlighting the genuine care within the team.

Overcoming Previous Challenges and Anticipating 2026

Before the facial injury, Fry was also managing recovery from Tommy John surgery earlier in the season, which affected both his defensive play and hitting performance, as his batting average remained below .200. Despite these struggles, manager Stephen Vogt praised Fry’s perseverance and leadership, expressing optimism for his increased role in the upcoming season.

With Cleveland’s outfield still unsettled and many roster decisions to be made, Fry’s role remains somewhat uncertain. During the first split-squad spring training game, he was assigned as designated hitter, indicating the team’s cautious approach as he regains full fitness and form.

Journey from a Player to Be Named Later to a Valued Guardian

Fry was originally acquired four years ago from the Milwaukee Brewers as the “player to be named later,” a designation often given to less prominent prospects. Over his three MLB seasons, all with Cleveland, he has grown not just as a player but also as a respected team member. His reflection on the past year shows a player both humbled and hopeful for a healthier, more productive 2026 season with the Guardians.
