Garrett Crochet Reacts to Giolito’s Surprising Free Agent Status

Lucas Giolito, following a solid performance in the 2025 season with the Boston Red Sox, opted out of his contract to explore free agency. Despite his notable comeback, especially after an injury-interrupted debut season, Giolito has not yet secured a new contract as the 2026 spring training begins.

This unexpected free agent status has raised eyebrows within the Red Sox organization, particularly with Garrett Crochet, who was once Giolito’s rotation partner during Boston’s postseason run in 2025.

Garrett Crochet Expresses Shock at Giolito Remaining Unsigned

Garrett Crochet, Boston’s current leading pitcher, has openly expressed disbelief about Giolito’s status in free agency. Having shared a critical role in the team’s 2025 success, Crochet finds the situation hard to understand given Giolito’s contributions last season.

“It’s insane. It just doesn’t make a ton of sense,”

Crochet said concerning Giolito’s free agent situation.

Giolito held a mutual option for 2026 worth $19 million, which he earned the right to exercise due to his innings pitched in 2025. Betting on his value exceeding this figure, he chose to enter free agency, but this strategy has yet to bring results.

Crochet further commented on Giolito’s market value, suggesting his performance surpasses what teams seem willing to offer.

“It’s at the point where … ‘what even is his price range’, because for the value he’s providing, I would say he’s outplaying his deal,”

Crochet remarked.

If you look at the one year for $18 million, I’d say he outplayed that. … When you’re looking at the ceiling and the floor, there’s not a huge difference there. There’s not a lot of pedigree and a lot of recent success.

Red Sox’s Rotation Changes Reduce Chances of Giolito’s Return

Since Giolito’s departure from his contract, the Red Sox have bolstered their starting rotation by acquiring pitchers Sonny Gray and Ranger Suarez. These additions have helped Boston assemble one of the strongest projected rotations in Major League Baseball for the upcoming season.

Garrett Crochet will remain a key figure in the rotation, while prospects Payton Tolle and Connelly Early aim to earn roles as either starting pitchers or bullpen options during spring training.

Anticipation for Crochet’s Performance and Giolito’s Next Move

As spring training progresses, Boston’s full pitching roster will become clearer ahead of Opening Day. Meanwhile, Giolito, with a 3.41 ERA and a 10-4 record in 2025, is widely expected to sign with a team soon, given the shrinking pool of starting pitchers available.

Crochet outlined the nature of the market for players like Giolito, noting how middle-market signings often take place once the season is underway.

“It’s been that way for a while,”

Crochet said.

The middle of the market on both the position player and pitching side kind of gets screwed up and ends up either signing after the season begins or what have you.
