Alex Vesia took the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers for the first time since Game 4 of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, delivering a strong performance by retiring the Seattle Mariners in order during the top of the fifth inning. This outing marked his emotional return to professional baseball following the heartbreaking loss of his daughter, Sterling, last October.
Vesia expressed that coming back to the Dodgers has been difficult but also meaningful, as he appreciates the support from fans while focusing on regaining his form on the field.
Balancing Grief and Baseball on the Road to Recovery
Reflecting on his journey, Vesia shared how challenging yet uplifting it has been to reconnect with the Dodgers community. He acknowledged the encouragement he received from fans immediately upon returning, and how that support has played a vital role for both him and his wife, Kayla.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s been hard, actually. I guess it’s hard in a good way because I want to interact with all the fans and stuff like that, but I know that I have a job to do,”
Vesia noted.
So, you know, even on the backfield, first day, we walk out the doors and, you know, cheers and lots of love. So, yeah, it means a lot to not only myself, but for Kayla too.
He also described the process of getting back into game shape, which began last November, and how it has helped him regain confidence on the mound.
“Yeah, honestly, you know, in November, I got back to work, just throwing, getting the body just right,”
Vesia said.
You know, I just want to have fun on the mound, honestly. I just want to be able to spaz out and kind of just be myself out there because right now that’s, you know, I feel really good out there, and it’s just me and myself and baseball.
Vesia’s Role in the Dodgers’ Bullpen Going Forward
Despite a challenging season for the Dodgers’ bullpen overall, Vesia has stood out as a bright spot and is expected to be an essential part of manager Dave Roberts’ pitching strategy in 2026. If he continues to perform with the same energy and skill demonstrated in his recent outing against the Mariners, he will likely serve as a key set-up man for closer Edwin Diaz.

Vesia reflected on the comfort and support he has found among his teammates during this time.
“Being around the guys, it’s really been comforting.”

Looking Ahead: What This Means for Vesia and the Dodgers
Alex Vesia’s return to the mound carries deep emotional weight, as he honors his daughter’s memory while striving to contribute to the Dodgers’ success. His performance not only offers hope for his personal comeback but also illustrates the resilience within the Dodgers organization as they prepare for the 2026 season. Fans and teammates alike will be watching closely to see how Vesia’s role evolves, both as a pitcher and as a source of inspiration for the team.
