Dodgers’ Alex Vesia Earns Ovation in Emotional Spring Debut

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Alex Vesia made his first appearance since last autumn during the team’s third spring training game on Monday in Glendale. His return comes months after he stepped away from baseball following the heartbreaking loss of his daughter, Sterling Sol.

Vesia, a key member of the Dodgers’ bullpen, was removed from the roster ahead of the World Series in October when his wife, Kayla, was expected to give birth. Tragically, their daughter passed away two days later, placing Vesia’s baseball career on hold as he coped with the loss.

Support From Teammates and Fans During the World Series

During the intense World Series that went to seven games, the Toronto Blue Jays‘ relievers honored Vesia by wearing his No. 51 on their caps. The Dodgers’ bullpen also paid tribute by inscribing his number on their gear throughout the series, which they ultimately won. This display of respect highlighted his significance to the team.

Emotional Reception at Spring Training Home Opener

At Monday’s game, held at the Dodgers’ spring training home in Glendale, Vesia pitched a flawless inning, drawing heartfelt applause from the fans. His effort marked a hopeful step forward as the crowd gave him a standing ovation, showing their strong support for his perseverance.

It’s been hard, actually … I guess it’s hard in a good way because I want to interact with all the fans and stuff like that, but I know I have a job to do,

Vesia said.

Even on the backfields’ first day, we walk out the doors and you know, cheers and lots of love.

Dodgers Management and Future Outlook

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who has spent time with Vesia during his recovery, emphasized that returning to the game could offer healing and stability for the pitcher. Known as one of the most reliable relievers over the past five years, Vesia boasts a 2.67 ERA across 295 regular-season appearances since 2021 and an impressive 1.86 ERA in postseason innings.

As spring training continues, Vesia is gradually working to rejoin the Dodgers’ roster, where his presence remains vital for the team’s bullpen depth and overall success.
