Aaron Boone Confident Cam Schlittler Is Ready for Opening Day

Right-handed pitcher Cam Schlittler is gaining momentum as the New York Yankees prepare for the 2024 season. Following a two-week pause due to back inflammation, Schlittler has impressed both the team and their supporters by moving back into the rotation. Manager Aaron Boone recently confirmed Schlittler passed an important evaluation, positioning him well for Cam Schlittler Opening Day readiness.

Performance Update from Manager Aaron Boone

Speaking on Thursday, Boone shared insights about Schlittler’s current condition, as reported by Greg Joyce of The New York Post. Schlittler completed 25 pitches during a live batting practice session, which Boone viewed positively.

“I expect him to be good [for the start of the season],”

Boone stated prior to Schlittler’s appearance on the mound. He added,

“Now, I don’t think he’ll be to 80-90 pitches yet. … But I’ll take 70 pitches of Cam Schlittler, especially with some of the off-days you have. Even if you’re in a piggyback situation for a time or two, sign me up for that.”

Schlittler’s 2023 Season and Yankees’ Performance

In the previous season, Schlittler appeared in 14 games, compiling a 4-3 record with a 2.96 ERA and tallying 84 strikeouts. The Yankees closed the year with a 94-68 record, sharing first place in the AL East alongside the Toronto Blue Jays. New York advanced past the Wild Card series by defeating the Boston Red Sox but were eventually eliminated by the Blue Jays in the ALDS.

Spring Training and Upcoming Schedule

The Yankees are currently conducting Spring Training at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida. Schlittler, a native of Walpole, Massachusetts, was selected by the Yankees in the seventh round of the 2022 draft. The team’s Opening Day game is scheduled for March 25 on the road against the San Francisco Giants, with the home opener set for April 3 against the Miami Marlins.
