David Ortiz Stands Firm Behind Rafael Devers After Red Sox Fallout

Rafael Devers began his professional baseball career when he signed with the Boston Red Sox as an international free agent in 2013 and made his major league debut in 2017. Over the years, Devers established himself as one of the most formidable hitters in Major League Baseball. During his tenure at Fenway Park, he earned three All-Star appearances and won two Silver Slugger Awards, while contributing significantly to the Red Sox’s 2018 World Series championship.

Devers’ time with Boston, however, ended abruptly and controversially when he was traded to the San Francisco Giants on June 15, 2025. This move came shortly after Devers openly criticized the Red Sox front office, leaving many fans unsettled by his departure.

David Ortiz Voices Support for Rafael Devers Amid Controversy

Despite the turmoil surrounding Devers’ exit, Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz publicly expressed his steadfast support for the young slugger during a recent episode of the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast. Ortiz, having known Devers since the player was 15 years old, emphasized his respect and affection for Devers despite the organizational conflicts.

“I have so much love and respect for Rafael Devers, man. Things happen in the game, organization-wise, you know. Other than that, that’s my boy. That’s a kid I met when he was 15. I’m always going to cheer for him, I’m always going to have love and respect for him, because he’s a great player. At the same time, sometimes as a player, we think we got everything figured out until somebody steps in and lets you know what’s up,” Ortiz said (13:15).

Ortiz further reflected on hard lessons learned through tough experiences, believing Devers will emerge stronger from this chapter in his career.

“I think what happened with him here, he learned from it, he took it as a lesson, and that’s just going to make him a better player and help him continue being the beast that he is. Always wishing him the best. I love watching him hit. I mean, that’s something that is unquestionable, you know, and I’m always wishing him the best,” he added.

Communication Concerns Possibly Behind Devers and Bregman Departures

In the past seven months, the Boston Red Sox experienced the loss of two prominent hitters: Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman. Devers was traded to the Giants just before the 2025 trade deadline, while Bregman departed via free agency to sign with the Chicago Cubs, despite Boston’s apparent interest in retaining him.

On the January 21 episode of Monster Territory, journalist Sean McAdam addressed a significant issue affecting the Red Sox organization that might have influenced both players’ decisions to leave. He pointed to communication failures within the team’s management as a central factor complicating their relationships with these star players.

“Those are two high-profile departures since last June, and both have been marked by some communication issues. Is that a symbol of a larger problem that needs to be addressed? Is it the perception that may or may not be accurate from the players’ side?” McAdam said (14:24).

McAdam suggested that Devers was frustrated by how the team handled communication regarding Bregman’s arrival and uncertain future, which coincided with the Red Sox’s decision to trade Devers. This left the player with little influence over his circumstances.

“I think Devers was complaining about their communication about Bregman coming on board, and what that would mean for him. By then, the Red Sox had decided to move Devers, and there wasn’t a lot he could do about it,” he added.

Devers’ Performance With the Giants and Boston’s Efforts to Fill the Gap

Since joining the San Francisco Giants, Rafael Devers has posted a batting average of .236, accumulating 79 hits, 20 home runs, 51 RBIs, and scoring 52 runs in total. For the Red Sox, his departure has created a significant void, as the team continues to seek a player of similar caliber to compensate for the sudden loss.

The Broader Impact on the Red Sox and Future Outlook

The departure of key hitters like Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman has underscored deeper challenges within the Boston Red Sox organization, especially regarding communication with players and management transparency. While Ortiz’s continued support for Devers maintains a hopeful tone for the player’s future success, Boston faces pressure to address internal issues to prevent further fractures.

Moving forward, the Red Sox will likely need to reassess their organizational culture and player relations strategies to retain top talent and restore confidence among their roster and fan base. Meanwhile, Devers’ ability to translate his lessons into improved performance with the Giants will be closely watched by analysts and fans alike, marking an intense and critical phase in his career.
