Since his major league debut in 2019, Luis Arraez has stood out as one of baseball’s most remarkable contact hitters. Known for rarely striking out and maintaining excellent control at the plate, the Venezuelan player relies on a straightforward strategy to keep his performance consistent.
Arraez boasts a career batting average of .316, earning him three All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger honors, and three batting titles. After the 2025 season, he became a free agent and subsequently signed a one-year, $12 million deal with the San Francisco Giants, parting ways with the San Diego Padres.
Appearing on the San Francisco Giants’ segment of MLB Network’s 30 Clubs, 30 Camps, Arraez shared his fundamental approach that supports his ability to put the ball in play regularly.
“Be simple, man. Be simple. I just try to put the ball in play. I don’t try to do too much,” Arraez said (0:33).
“If I try to do too much, maybe I strike out more. But, I don’t want to strike out, I just want to put the ball in play, and try to see a lot of pitches to hold my hitting behind me. I just go out there and enjoy,” he added.
How Arraez’s Role Benefits Key Giants Players
In a February 2 episode of Baseball Today, former Minnesota Twins slugger Trevor Plouffe highlighted how Luis Arraez can enhance the performance of other prominent Giants hitters such as Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman. Plouffe stressed the value of Arraez’s contact skills at the top of the batting order.
“I hope they end up putting him at the leadoff position. If you can get him up there, in the first at-bat, he’s seeing five, six pitches,” Plouffe said (13:45).
“Just pi**ing the pitcher off right away, then you can turn it over to Devers, Adames, and Chap. There is something to that dynamic. How quantifiable is it? I don’t know. I think he works well at the top of this lineup,” he added.
Arraez finished the 2025 season with a solid .292 batting average, accompanied by 8 home runs and 61 runs batted in, underscoring his consistent contribution to the Giants offense.

Arraez’s Place in Baseball’s Current Landscape
Luis Arraez’s approach to hitting, centered on simplicity and contact, distinguishes him in an era often focused on power and home runs. His ability to consistently reach base and wear down pitchers provides a valuable asset for the San Francisco Giants’ lineup. By maximizing pitch counts and setting the table for power hitters like Devers, Adames, and Chapman, Arraez plays a pivotal role in creating scoring opportunities.
As the 2026 season approaches, how Arraez adapts to his role with the Giants and influences his teammates could be a key factor in the team’s offensive success. His style offers a contrast to many modern hitters and reinforces the timeless value of making consistent contact in baseball.
