The trade was completed on January 13, 2026, concluding months of speculation about Arenado’s destination. Arizona took on the last two years and $42 million of his contract, while the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to pay $31 million to ease the financial burden. In return, the Diamondbacks traded promising pitching prospect Jack Martinez, demonstrating their clear focus on immediate success.
Arenado’s Challenge to Rebound After Tough Season
Coming off a difficult 2025, Arenado struggled with a .237 batting average, 12 home runs, and a .666 OPS over 107 games, hampered by a strained right shoulder later in the year.
