Rhys Hoskins Reveals Why He Chose Cleveland Guardians Deal

Rhys Hoskins has ended his free agency wait by agreeing to a one-year minor league contract with the Cleveland Guardians, joining the team for spring training camp in 2026. The first baseman, eager to prove himself again, explained his decision during a Guardians spring training game against the Chicago White Sox.

Discussion with Guardians’ Vogt influenced Hoskins’ decision

Hoskins described how a recent conversation with catcher Vogt helped him feel confident about joining Cleveland. He highlighted the Guardians’ winning culture as a major attraction.

“It’s great to be here. It’s nice, always good to be a part of an organization that is used to winning, and ever since I’ve been in the league, that’s been the case here,”

Hoskins said.

“It was a pretty quiet free agency for me, pretty quiet winter until, honestly, until the Guardians called, you know, just a couple days before I ended up signing, so I had a chance to talk to Vogt before I did, and it really just seemed like we, you know, we saw eye-to-eye in a lot of the ways that we see the game.”

He added,

“I played against him early in my career and always just really respected how he, you know, took on each role that he had, whether that was, you know, catching every day or being a bat off the bench or just being a mentor to other guys, too. You know, I think that’s something that I’ve tried to take on in my career as well, and, you know, hopefully that’s a good match here.”

Career challenges and potential impact in Cleveland

Hoskins initially gained attention during the 2017 season with the Philadelphia Phillies, nicknamed Rhys Lightning for his early success. However, more recent years have been difficult due to injuries affecting his performance and playing time, especially during his tenure with the Milwaukee Brewers. If Hoskins can regain his previous form, the Guardians could benefit from his experience and power potential. At minimum, strong spring training showings might secure him a spot on Cleveland’s 40-man roster or attract interest from other teams.

Significance of signing and outlook for the season

Joining an organization like the Guardians offers Hoskins a fresh start within a competitive environment that values winning and mentorship. His connection with Vogt signals a mutual respect and a shared vision for the game, which may help Hoskins adapt quickly and contribute meaningfully. As spring training progresses, all eyes will be on how he integrates with the team and whether he can reclaim the productivity that marked his early career.
