The Washington Nationals have been actively experimenting during spring training as they prepare for the upcoming season, putting more than 50 players through at-bats while adjusting pitching strategies to rely less on fastballs. Among the adjustments, James Wood has drawn attention due to his increased time in right field, a shift from his previous consistent placement in left field. The team’s focus on enhancing Wood’s defensive capabilities has prompted this change, aiming to expand his versatility within the outfield.
Manager Seeks to Avoid Restricting Wood to One Position
Manager Blake Butera highlighted the desire not to confine James Wood to just left field, emphasizing his athletic ability and strong arm. Butera explained,
“Not sure why he just needs to be in left field,”
and added,
“He’s a pretty good athlete. He’s young. He has a good arm. I want to give him an opportunity to be able to play both, if it comes to that — not necessarily pigeonhole him in one spot.”
Up until now, Wood’s defensive appearances at the major league level have all been in left field, despite having played more games in center and right fields during his minor league career. This offseason, Wood set a goal to improve his defense, working closely with bench coach Michael Johns at IMG Academy to enhance his skills, although his career defensive metrics have been challenging so far.
Plans for Wood to Cover Both Corner Outfield Positions
Butera intends to utilize Wood in both corner outfield positions this season but remains uncertain about where Wood will spend most of his defensive time. The manager said,
“Not sure what that spot is going to be yet, but that’s something we’re going to figure out over this next couple of weeks.”
Spring training has shown that the Nationals have a considerable amount of positional flexibility in the outfield, with players like Dylan Crews and Jacob Young able to play center field, and several players—including Wood, Crews, Daylen Lile, and Robert Hassell III—rotating through corner outfield spots. This approach not only helps the team optimize defensive alignments but also provides more options for constructing the lineup.
Potential Impact of Increased Defensive Flexibility for Nationals
By shifting their strategy around James Wood’s positioning, the Nationals are aiming to maximize his athleticism and develop his defense in ways that could improve the overall strength of their outfield. If Wood successfully adapts to handling multiple outfield positions, it could allow greater tactical depth and lineup flexibility for the team throughout the season. Washington’s willingness to explore these options early in spring training reflects a commitment to adjusting personnel roles dynamically as the season progresses, which might benefit both Wood’s growth and the team’s defensive performance.
