Ex-Mariners Insider: Why Bregman Is Cubs’ Key to 2026 Success

Alex Bregman chose to opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox following an impressive 2025 season and entered free agency. Despite the Red Sox’s efforts to retain him, it was the Chicago Cubs who secured Bregman on a five-year, $175 million contract, signaling a major investment in the team’s future.

How Bregman’s Consistency Could Drive Cubs’ 2026 Performance

On a recent episode of Hot Stove, Harold Reynolds, a former Seattle Mariners second baseman, highlighted Bregman as the crucial factor for the Cubs’ success next season. Reynolds emphasized Bregman’s steady performance and leadership as pivotal elements for the team’s prospects.

“It’s Bregman, he’s the X-factor. They brought him in for a reason,” Reynolds said. “He’s doing it already, he’s leading the club. He’s leading guys around, they’re following him around. He’s showing them how to win. He’s been a winner, he’s won on teams. I don’t know how the power’s going to translate at Wrigley.

“Will he have to change his swing a little bit? But he’s the guy. How he goes, so will the Cubs. How Bregman goes, so will they. I think he’s going to be steady Eddy, be himself, and I think because of that, you’re going to know what you’re getting. I don’t think the Cubs have had that in anybody they’ve signed as a free agent. Bregman will be Bregman, and that’s what you’re going to get.”

Sportscaster Highlights Bregman’s Clubhouse Influence Justifying Cubs’ Commitment

During a January 11 broadcast of the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast, Chicago radio personality Matt Spiegel discussed the leadership qualities Bregman adds to the Cubs organization. Spiegel compared Bregman’s clubhouse presence favorably to that of previous veteran Justin Turner, whose influence the Cubs valued during the 2025 season.

“They kept Justin Turner on the roster all year because he brought that (clubhouse presence), and they admitted that it was important,” Spiegel said.

“This (Bregman) is a better fit than Justin Turner. This is why Schwarber is a legend, because Schwarber has all of that, and produces. If Bregman has all of that and produces, that’s when the value really jumps up.”

Bregman’s 2025 Season and What It Means for Chicago’s Future

In 2025, Bregman compiled a .273 batting average, hitting 18 home runs and registering 62 RBIs. These figures underline his consistent offensive contribution, which combined with his leadership, positions him as a significant asset for the Cubs heading into the 2026 season. With Wrigley Field’s unique environment, questions remain about how his power numbers will adapt, but his overall steady approach offers the team predictability and reliability.

The Cubs’ commitment to Bregman signals a strategic focus on integrating proven leadership and consistent production to steer the team back toward competitiveness. His performance will likely set the tone for Chicago’s season, impacting both player morale and on-field success.
