The San Diego Padres signed former All-Star pitcher Walker Buehler in February, aiming to revive his career after several difficult seasons. Buehler, once a dominant force for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has faced significant challenges following a second Tommy John surgery in August 2022, which has markedly affected his performance.
Previously a two-time All-Star in 2019 and 2021, Buehler posted impressive numbers between 2017 and 2021, including a 40-13 record, a 2.90 ERA, and 632 strikeouts in 573.1 innings. However, since his return in 2024, his record slipped to 11-13 with an elevated 5.10 ERA and 156 strikeouts over 201.1 innings. Despite these struggles, he showed flashes of his former self during the 2024 postseason, posting 13 consecutive scoreless innings and closing out Game 5 against the New York Yankees.
Encouraging Signs in Early Padres Spring Training Appearances
After going unsigned for a period, Buehler secured a minor league contract with the Padres and began Spring Training with them. Following two weeks of camp and three innings pitched against the NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Organization, Buehler expressed cautious optimism about his current condition, particularly noting an encouraging improvement in velocity.
“I think pitching on the backfields is different than pitching (against major leaguers in a stadium). Adrenaline is not quite what it probably will be here in the next one. But for (the velocity) to kind of casually be in there, I think is really nice and reassuring.” ?Walker Buehler, Pitcher
“Every year my elbow seems to kind of start feeling a little bit better. And this year is no different. I got in a lot better shape than typical offseasons, and I’m feeling good about it.” ?Walker Buehler, Pitcher
Although Buehler’s fastball velocity reached 92 mph during the game against the NC Dinos, down from his 94 mph average last year and his previous peak in the upper 90s, the early signs remain positive. Alongside velocity, his ability to mix different pitches effectively also stood out, a necessary skill to succeed against major league hitters.

Competition for a Rotation Spot on the Padres’ Roster
Buehler is currently vying for a position in the Padres’ starting rotation, likely competing for a spot in the back end of the rotation if the team sticks with a five-man setup. The Padres’ top four rotation spots appear to be secured by Michael King, Joe Musgrove, Nick Pivetta, and Randy Vásquez.
The competition for the last available role includes several veteran pitchers such as Germán Márquez, JP Sears, Triston McKenzie, and Marco Gonzales, with the possibility of two spots opening if the Padres opt for a six-man rotation. The team is also exploring options to add more pitching depth before Opening Day, maintaining openness toward further roster moves.
Looking Ahead: Potential Impact of Buehler’s Return
Buehler’s health and performance during spring training will be critical in determining his role with the Padres this season. His promising velocity and improved condition offer hope that he can regain enough form to contribute meaningfully at the major league level. The Padres, seeking to reinforce their pitching staff, may benefit significantly if Buehler returns to a productive state.
As the season approaches, Buehler’s progress will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, amid a broader effort by the Padres to strengthen their rotation and contend for postseason success.
