Daniel Schneemann Aims to Master More Than Just Versatility

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Daniel Schneemann, the Cleveland Guardians’ versatile utility player, is preparing for his third full Major League Baseball season after an impressive 2025 campaign. At 29 years old, Schneemann distinguished himself as one of only eight MLB players to start at six different positions last year, showcasing his adaptability by taking the field at every spot except first base, pitcher, and catcher. His broad skill set has made him an essential component of the Guardians’ lineup and defense.

Defensive Excellence Across Multiple Positions

Schneemann’s defensive talents stood out as some of the best in the league when measured by advanced analytics. He ranked in the 95th percentile across all MLB players in Outs Above Average (OAA), highlighting his exceptional range and reliability in the field. This statistical performance, combined with eyeball assessments from experts, earned him a finalist position for the Gold Glove Award in the utility player category. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt reflected on Schneemann’s utility role, saying,

“Schnee is always going to be bouncing around, That’s what he brings to the table is that he can play six positions at an above-average clip to go along with his hitting.”

Focus on Defensive Improvement Despite Strong Versatility

Despite his widely recognized ability to contribute defensively at multiple positions, Schneemann remains humble and committed to growth, particularly in certain areas. He admits that while he excels at second base, he sees room for improvement at shortstop and the outfield.

“I feel like I can improve on shortstop and the outfield more while I’m here, Not to say I can’t improve on second, but I’ve played my best there. I need to get better defensively at those other spots,”

he shared. Even though center field was statistically his weakest position last year, Schneemann still maintained productivity, underscoring his all-around value to the team.

Efforts to Enhance Offensive Skills During Spring Training

As spring training continues, Schneemann is dedicating this period to refining his offensive approach with the goal of becoming a consistent everyday contributor. He has worked on plate discipline, stating,

“I’ve been practicing being more selective in the zone, But when I use the pitching machine, I try to keep hitting the ball to the middle of the field.”

Last season, Schneemann batted .206 with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs across 379 at-bats. While he excels at hitting fastballs, he acknowledges the need to improve his ability to connect with breaking balls, especially off-speed pitches.

“I have to be better at hitting the off-speed, This offseason, I have been trying to find better ways to be good at hitting breaking pitches. The key for me is just trusting my preparation,”

he explained.

Physical Development and Team Dynamics

Schneemann’s physical condition also caught the attention of his manager, who praised his offseason efforts to build strength.

“He did a great job putting on muscle and size this winter,”

Vogt noted.

“He looks strong which adds on to his great speed. I’m really excited for Daniel just where he’s at right now physically.”

Beyond physical readiness, Schneemann values the camaraderie with his teammates, saying,

“That chemistry goes a long way as you get deeper into the season, We all feed off each other and that is one of the best parts about being on this team.”

The Guardians’ collective energy is a foundation they hope to build upon following their late-season push last year.

Looking Ahead to the Upcoming Season

With the baseball season set to begin in late March, Schneemann faces the familiar uncertainty of where he will be positioned defensively on any given day. This flexibility is now a defining trait of his presence on the team, and after demonstrating his value over the past two seasons, it has become clear that this unpredictability is a strength rather than a challenge. As he puts it,

“Hopefully we don’t put ourselves in a position to make a last-second run, But we believe in the group we have.”

The Guardians aim to avoid last-minute playoff pushes by establishing strong performances early on, with Schneemann’s versatile utility role expected to be a key asset in that pursuit.
