Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal has responded to the increasing trade rumors surrounding him as he enters his final season before becoming a free agent this fall. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly eyeing Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Landon Knack amid a pitching rotation shortage.
Skubal Addresses Trade Rumors and Uncertainty About His Future
Following the Tigers’ recent signing of Framber Valdez, speculation intensified that the team may trade Tarik Skubal to avoid losing him for nothing when his contract expires. Skubal, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, spoke openly about the situation during an appearance on Ben Verlander’s Flippin’ Bat podcast, emphasizing that the potential trade is beyond his control and something he cannot dwell on.
I want to make sure I word this right ’cause I don’t want to get taken out of context, you know,
Skubal said.
It’s not that I was worried about getting traded ’cause obviously that’s out of my control, but it’s one of those things you can’t really worry about it. And I don’t want that to sound like I didn’t want to be a Detroit Tiger. That’s not what I want that to sound like. I want it to sound like it’s out of my control, so I can’t really stress about it. You know, it does me no good to have it impact my offseason workouts or have it impact my day-to-day life. It’s just something I can’t focus on.

Skubal also revealed that while he tries not to let the rumors affect him, his family members have been more concerned about what the future holds.
But you know, sure, it crept into my mind,
he continued.
I’ve seen a lot of stuff, whether it be true or I don’t know what was reported or how factual a lot of that stuff was. But yeah, I mean I saw it, I definitely saw it. As far as it impacting me, try to not. You know, I think I spent a lot of time answering questions from family like, ‘Hey, are you going to get traded?’
Despite the ongoing speculation, Skubal is focused on preparing for the season, prioritizing his offseason workouts without letting trade theories disrupt his routine.
Philadelphia Phillies Explore Options to Reinforce Pitching Rotation
The Phillies face a pressing need to bolster their pitching staff with Zack Wheeler expected to start the season on the injured list. Seeking temporary reinforcements, the team is looking into possible trade targets from the Dodgers, who boast strong depth in their pitching lineup.
Sports reporter Nick Deeds identified Dodgers pitcher Landon Knack as a potential acquisition for Philadelphia. Other candidates mentioned include Cubs’ Javier Assad, Tigers’ Keider Montero, and Giants’ Hayden Birdsong, all of whom could compete with Andrew Painter for a roster spot.
However, Deeds noted the rarity of such pitchers being traded, given their value to their respective organizations. He noted the Phillies would likely need to offer substantial compensation to secure any of these prospects.
Meanwhile, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has ruled out pursuing free-agent stars like future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer, signaling the team’s focus remains on internal options and trade possibilities.
Trade Rumors Echo Throughout Baseball Circles
As the baseball offseason advances, rumors around trade possibilities continue to spread, impacting players, teams, and fans. The Tigers’ handling of Tarik Skubal’s situation will be closely watched, especially as he gears up for what could be his final year in Detroit. For the Phillies, bolstering the roster ahead of the season remains a priority, especially in light of injury setbacks.
These developments underline the uneasy atmosphere enveloping many players who face uncertainty regarding their futures. How these trade talks will affect team dynamics and player performances remains to be seen in the coming months.
