Alek Thomas Shines for Team Mexico vs D-backs in WBC

Outfielder Alek Thomas, known for his strong spring training performance with the Arizona Diamondbacks, continued his impressive form while playing for Team Mexico in a World Baseball Classic exhibition game on Tuesday at Salt River Fields. Thomas went 2-for-3 with an RBI and notably prevented a potential extra-base hit by D-backs prospect Ryan Waldschmidt, maintaining his momentum from a .375/.444/.625 batting line during Cactus League play.

Despite being on opposing sides, Thomas delivered key contributions, including an RBI hit that triggered a decisive four-run rally, sealing the victory for Team Mexico.

Facing His Major League Team Creates a Unique Moment

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo remarked on the unusual feeling of competing against Thomas. He said,

I said goodbye to [Thomas] the other day,

and noted Thomas’s commitment,

His first thought was, tell [Zac] Gallen I’m going to back-leg him. He was already thinking about facing Gallen two days ago.

Though Thomas never faced Gallen—who delivered two scoreless innings on 22 pitches—he succeeded at the plate against relievers Taylor Clarke and Juan Morillo. Lovullo described the situation as awkward, very awkward, but praised Thomas’s performance:

But he’s a good player, and I’m excited for him,

continuing,

Put a couple of really good swings on the ball. One in particular was with a man at third base and less than two outs. Followed all the lessons that we’ve taught him and counter-punched us and got the job done, so I was really, really proud of him.

Thomas Builds on Previous WBC Experience

Thomas is representing Mexico in the WBC for the second time, having participated in 2023. His teammate Zac Gallen commented on Thomas’s growth, saying,

I know he came back from the 2023 WBC and spoke really highly of the experience and what he took away from it.

Gallen added,

For him to go there and now be a veteran on that team is probably pretty cool for him. Hopefully he plays well and is ready to play once he comes back.

Arizona Diamondbacks Players Support National Team Duties

Team Mexico’s Alek Thomas is among several key Diamondbacks players representing their countries in the WBC, supported fully by Arizona’s organization. The D-backs’ entire starting infield is absent due to international commitments, with Ketel Marte, Geraldo Perdomo, and Carlos Santana playing for the Dominican Republic and Nolan Arenado representing Puerto Rico.

Lovullo emphasized the importance of backing his players:

[Thomas is] proudly representing his country of Mexico, and we’re going to root him on,

showing the team’s commitment both on and off the field.

Implications for the Diamondbacks and the WBC

With several key players competing internationally, the Diamondbacks face a lineup adjustment period during the WBC. Meanwhile, Alek Thomas’s ongoing success with Team Mexico highlights his development as an impactful player on the international stage. His ability to perform under pressure against his own MLB club reflects his growing maturity and skill.

As the WBC progresses, Thomas’s play could influence both his future with the Diamondbacks and Mexico’s competitiveness in the tournament, underscoring the significance of the event for players balancing club and national duties.
