Alan Roden Shines in Spring Training, Eyes Twins Spotlight

Alan Roden has begun spring training with notable success following a difficult previous season with the Minnesota Twins. After a season-ending thumb injury in August 2025 cut his rookie year short, Roden is showing promising signs as he competes for a roster spot this year.

Despite playing in just 12 games before his injury, Roden remained dedicated throughout the offseason, training at Target Field to prepare for the upcoming season. This preparation was crucial for his adjustment to the major league environment and the Twins organization.

Background and Early Career Developments

Originally drafted in the third round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, Roden had limited major league experience before being traded to Minnesota along with Kendry Rojas in exchange for Louis Varland and Ty France at the trade deadline. The injury hampered his ability to fully settle into the Twins lineup last year.

Before his injury, Roden struggled offensively with a .191 batting average, a .261 on-base percentage, and a .294 slugging percentage along with five walks and 24.2% strikeouts in 40 at-bats. However, his performance in Triple-A Buffalo during 2025 showed significant potential, where he hit .331 with a .423 on-base percentage and a .496 slugging, including three home runs and 18 RBIs over 142 plate appearances.

Mental Approach and Adjustments Made in Offseason

Roden emphasized his focus on learning and staying positive despite early setbacks. He highlighted the importance of becoming comfortable and familiar with his surroundings, especially after moving to a new team.

“Trying to get familiar is a big thing for me; it is for everyone, but I would say for me specifically, just getting comfortable and trying to get familiar is always helpful, especially for me.”

He added that reflecting on past performance while working to improve both mentally and physically has been key to his development.

“I think it’s a lot of trying to learn, not dwell on it obviously, try to find bright points where they are,”

“Obviously, taking a deep dive into that and making some adjustments mentally and physically on that. I’m feeling okay about it so far, feeling good about it so far.”

Competition for Outfield Positions in a Crowded Roster

The Twins’ outfield depth, particularly among left-handed hitters, creates intense competition for the limited spots on the Opening Day roster. Among Roden’s rivals are Matt Wallner, Trevor Larnach, James Outman, and Emmanuel Rodriguez, with only two likely to earn those roles.

Roden’s versatility is a strong advantage, as he can perform in all three outfield positions. However, with two minor league option years remaining, he may begin the season at Triple-A St. Paul before moving up to the major league club.

Promising Performance in Early Spring Training Games

This spring, Roden has impressed with a 7-for-14 batting line over five games, highlighted by a dramatic grand slam off Atlanta Braves reliever Javy Guerra. The homer was a powerful swing against a 93 mph fastball, showcasing his offensive capabilities.

Balancing Expectations During Spring Training

Roden remains cautious about placing too much emphasis on spring training results, understanding that these games serve primarily to prepare players for the regular season. He recognizes the need to balance confidence with patience to avoid peaking too early or feeling discouraged by short-term slumps.

“I think everyone, every hitter at least, and probably pitchers, too, kind of has to play a game with themselves trying not to get too panicked or freaked out about the good or the bad this early in spring,”

“If it’s especially good, there’s still a long time until the season, so you don’t want to peak too early. And if it’s especially bad, you’ll hear it a lot as nothing’s bad right now.”

He added that the main focus is to have competitive at-bats, see as many pitches as possible, and get into a rhythm for the season ahead.

“Just trying to have competitive at-bats, see as many pitches as possible, and just kind of get those competitive juices flowing and getting ready to play. That these spring training games are trying to really hone in on trying to be ready to play for the season.”

Future Outlook and Role Flexibility

Regardless of whether Roden starts in the minors or majors, his ability to contribute in multiple outfield spots makes him a valuable asset for the Twins. Regular playing time with the St. Paul Saints will allow him to maintain consistent production, potentially earning a call-up by mid-season. Fans can anticipate Roden becoming a fixture at the top of Minnesota’s lineup, setting the stage for the team’s core hitters.

“I think I’ll play around a little bit, move around. I think that’s something I would like to pride myself in is versatility in the outfield,”

“I’m able to play all three positions out there if necessary, that’s something I want. I’m going to play wherever they put me in the lineup, and I think that’s the plan.”
