Colorado Rapids Shine with Three U-16 Call-Ups to US Team

The Colorado Rapids have announced that midfielder Nathan Tchoumba from Colorado Rapids 2, along with Rapids Academy players Alex Hernandez and Jax Padgett, have been called up to the United States U-16 Boys’ National Team for an upcoming domestic training camp. The camp, led by Head Coach Paul Simpson, will take place from February 11 through February 18 in Atlanta, Georgia. These three Rapids players represent the second-highest number of selections from any of the 13 clubs involved in the camp.

Previous International Experience and Player Backgrounds

Tchoumba and Hernandez have previously earned multiple call-ups to represent the country, most recently participating in the Concacaf Under-15 Championship in the summer of 2025. Both have also been invited to various youth international training camps and friendlies. This camp marks the first time all three players will join the U-16 team under Coach Paul Simpson.

Player Profiles Highlighting Growth and Achievements

Fifteen-year-old Nathan Tchoumba recently signed a Homegrown Player contract with Colorado Rapids 2 on January 16, 2026, becoming the youngest player ever signed by the team. During the previous fall, he balanced his time in the Rapids Academy between U-18 and U-16 squads, playing as a defensive midfielder. His performance earned him a spot in the Generation Adidas Cup Rising XI in 2025, which honors standout emerging talents in the tournament.

Sixteen-year-old Alex Hernandez joined the Colorado Rapids Futures Program in 2022 after coming through ALBION SC Denver. Over the last two seasons, he has competed in various age groups within the Rapids Academy and has made significant contributions across major tournaments such as MLS NEXT Cup, Generation Adidas Cup, and MLS NEXT Flex. Internationally, Hernandez has recorded nine appearances for the U.S., contributing one goal and three assists over 400 minutes of play.

Fifteen-year-old Jax Padgett became part of the Rapids Academy in 2024 after moving from Oakland, California. Throughout his time at the Academy, he has competed up to the U-18 level but mainly played with the U-16 team, where he has logged the most minutes among his peers this season. Padgett’s offensive impact is notable, having scored 13 goals and assisted on eight others during the current campaign.

Implications for Player Development and Team Prospects

These call-ups highlight the strength of the Colorado Rapids development system in producing youth talent capable of reaching national team levels. Nathan Tchoumba, Alex Hernandez, and Jax Padgett’s selections provide valuable experience and exposure that can accelerate their growth and potential careers. As they participate in the camp in Atlanta, their performances could influence future opportunities at higher competitive tiers, both within the Rapids organization and on the international stage.
