Charlotte FC announced on Wednesday that they have secured forward Idan Toklomati’s contract through the 2028-29 Major League Soccer season, with an option extending into 2029-30. The 21-year-old Israeli international will maintain his U22 Initiative roster status as he continues with the club.
General Manager Highlights Toklomati’s Growth and Team Aspirations
Charlotte FC’s general manager, Zoran Krneta, praised Toklomati as one of MLS’s brightest young talents and noted the forward’s development since joining the team at 19.
“Idan is a top talent that we were able to sign at 19 and has blossomed into one of Major League Soccer’s brightest talents,”
Krneta said. He emphasized Toklomati’s belief in the club’s development path and his breakout first full season, which featured a double-digit goal tally. Krneta added,
“Our aim, as well as Idan’s, is to win trophies for the Carolinas, and this extension is an important piece of our long-term roster-building strategy.”
Background and Career Progression of Idan Toklomati with Charlotte FC
Toklomati arrived at Charlotte FC in 2024 from Maccabi Petah Tikva, initially playing with the MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, Crown Legacy FC. He established himself with the first team in 2025 after striker Patrick Agyemang’s departure to Derby County in the EFL Championship. During that season, Toklomati contributed 13 goals and 4 assists over 36 appearances across all competitions, playing a key role as Charlotte FC finished fourth in the Eastern Conference.
Upcoming Season and Team Outlook Under Head Coach Dean Smith
The 2026 MLS season will kick off for Charlotte FC on February 21 with an away game against St. Louis CITY SC, marking the team’s third year under the guidance of head coach Dean Smith. The contract extension for Toklomati reflects the club’s commitment to building a competitive roster that can contend for championships in the coming years.
Significance of the Toklomati Extension for Charlotte FC
Locking in Toklomati through the 2030 season underscores Charlotte FC’s confidence in his potential to contribute long-term success. As a young international talent, his continued presence is pivotal for the team’s ambitions to solidify their standing in MLS and pursue titles. This strategic move aims to sustain the club’s momentum and foster growth within their squad.
