Darlington Nagbe, a four-time MLS Cup winner, has been named the individual development coach for Columbus Crew, the team announced in a press release on Friday. Nagbe’s appointment comes shortly after his retirement from professional soccer at the conclusion of the 2025 season, marking a new chapter in his career focused on player development within the Crew organization.
Team Leadership Highlights Nagbe’s Value to the Club
Issa Tall, the general manager of Columbus Crew, emphasized that Nagbe’s experience and character make him an outstanding fit for this coaching position. Tall explained that Nagbe’s ability to build meaningful relationships sets him apart and will greatly benefit the club’s younger players. According to Tall, having Nagbe available for one-on-one mentoring will help maximize the growth and long-term success of the team.
“This is a perfect coaching role for his experience and personality to maximize the potential and long-term growth of players throughout our Club,”
said Crew General Manager Issa Tall.
“Beyond his accomplishments on the field, what sets Darlington apart is the genuine care he puts into building meaningful relationships. He will be an incredible resource to our entire Club, especially our young players. Having direct access to that experience and someone who can mentor them one-on-one and share his soccer expertise is invaluable to their growth and the long-term success of our Club.”
Nagbe Reflects on Continuing His Journey with the Crew
During his playing career, Nagbe made 445 regular-season appearances and earned respect as a key figure in Major League Soccer. Following his retirement, he expressed enthusiasm about joining the Crew’s staff to support player development both on and off the field. He articulated a personal commitment to mentoring young athletes as they navigate the challenges of becoming professional players.
“I’m excited to remain a part of the Crew family and still be part of this Club, team and community that has given me so much as a player,”
Nagbe said in the announcement.
“I now get a chance to be part of the staff to help the young athletes at our Club develop in soccer but also off the field, to be a voice of reason and support, and do whatever I can to give back in any way possible. Growing up as an athlete, I always wished I had a certain type of support, so what I didn’t have as a player and athlete, hopefully I can offer to the young athletes trying to navigate the same path I took to become a professional soccer player.”
Nagbe’s Role and Community Involvement Moving Forward
Beyond his coaching duties, Nagbe will continue contributing to Columbus Crew’s philanthropic efforts, extending his impact off the pitch. His transition to development coach reflects the club’s commitment to leveraging veteran leadership in nurturing upcoming talent, promising positive growth for both the players and the organization as a whole.
