Darlington Nagbe Named Columbus Crew’s New Development Coach

The Columbus Crew announced the appointment of Darlington Nagbe as their new Individual Development Coach. Starting immediately, Nagbe, a club legend and four-time MLS Cup champion, will focus on supporting players at every level from the First Team down to the youngest Academy groups by designing personalized improvement plans tailored to each player’s needs. This role allows Nagbe to leverage his extensive experience and deep understanding of the game to foster long-term player growth within the organization.

General Manager Highlights Nagbe’s Unique Contribution

Crew General Manager Issa Tall praised Nagbe’s character and soccer knowledge as key reasons for his hiring. Tall emphasized Nagbe’s ability to build meaningful relationships, explaining how this quality will make him a vital mentor, especially for young athletes. According to Tall, providing players with direct access to Nagbe’s expertise will enhance their development and contribute to the club’s sustained success.

“Darlington’s character and breadth of soccer knowledge make him an invaluable addition to our staff. This is a perfect coaching role for his experience and personality to maximize the potential and long-term growth of players throughout our Club,” said Crew General Manager Issa Tall. “Beyond his accomplishments on the field, what sets Darlington apart is the genuine care he puts into building meaningful relationships. He will be an incredible resource to our entire Club, especially our young players. Having direct access to that experience and someone who can mentor them one-on-one and share his soccer expertise is invaluable to their growth and the long-term success of our Club.”

Nagbe’s Commitment to Player Development and Community

Expressing enthusiasm for remaining part of the Crew, Nagbe shared his dedication to helping young athletes develop not only as soccer players but as individuals. He wants to offer guidance he wished he had as a youth athlete, supporting players as they navigate the challenges of becoming professionals. Nagbe emphasized the club’s comprehensive resources, which integrate schooling, training, and close interaction with professional players to create a well-rounded development environment.

“I’m excited to remain a part of the Crew family and still be part of this Club, team and community that has given me so much as a player,” Nagbe said. “I now get a chance to be part of the staff to help the young athletes at our Club develop in soccer but also off the field, to be a voice of reason and support, and do whatever I can to give back in any way possible. Growing up as an athlete, I always wished I had a certain type of support, so what I didn’t have as a player and athlete, hopefully I can offer to the young athletes trying to navigate the same path I took to become a professional soccer player.”

“The Club now has all these resources that are available to the young athletes. Growing up, I had a separation in terms of schooling and playing, but here the kids have the facilities, schooling and access to top quality coaches for the chance to develop both on and off the field. They additionally have the chance to be around First Team players, Crew 2 players and all levels of the Academy, so they can always see the next step in their future and what they want to become.”

Role Focus and Continued Community Engagement

Nagbe will collaborate with coaching staff to deliver targeted positional, unit, and team training sessions, ensuring alignment between Individual Development Plans and practical on-field instruction. His new role reflects the Crew’s ongoing commitment to player-centered development, aiming to maximize each athlete’s potential throughout their journey. Beyond coaching duties, Nagbe will maintain his active involvement in community outreach initiatives and philanthropic programs affiliated with the club.

He is recognized as the 2024 Audi Goals Drive Progress Impact Award recipient, an honor granted to MLS players who demonstrate dedication to equity, inclusion, and community improvement. Nagbe’s continued support extends to programs such as the Crew’s “Stay in the Game!” Attendance Network and the “Soccer in Schools” initiative, reinforcing his commitment to local youth and the broader Columbus community.

Legacy as a Player and Future Impact

Darlington Nagbe concluded a distinguished 15-year professional soccer career with the Columbus Crew at the end of the 2025 season. During his tenure, he emerged as a key leader both on and off the field. Prior to joining the Crew, Nagbe played for the Portland Timbers and Atlanta United FC, accumulating major achievements including three MLS All-Star selections and four MLS Cup championships. His contributions helped drive the Crew to notable victories in the 2020 and 2023 MLS Cups, the 2024 Leagues Cup, and the 2021 Campeones Cup. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in leading the team to its first Concacaf Champions Cup Final appearance in 2024.

With 445 regular season matches played—the fifth highest in MLS history—and 34 postseason starts, Nagbe’s consistent presence and performance left a lasting mark on the league. Transitioning into coaching ensures his valuable knowledge and leadership will continue influencing the Columbus Crew’s culture and development programs for years to come.
