DC United Stays Undefeated at Home After Opener Win

The 2026 Major League Soccer season kicked off on February 21 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., where D.C. United secured a narrow 1-0 win against the Philadelphia Union, energizing a crowd of 18,003 fans. This crucial victory maintained D.C. United’s undefeated record at home to start the season, highlighting their solid defensive effort and hopeful attacking prospects.

The decisive moment came in the 23rd minute when Tai Baribo scored his first goal for the club, finishing with precision to break the deadlock in a closely fought match. Baribo’s contribution proved pivotal, marking the striker as an emerging offensive threat for the Black and Red as they pursue a breakthrough year. His impact extended beyond the goal, remaining active with three shots during his 89 minutes on the pitch.

Baribo reflected on the result and his performance:

“I’m glad that I scored. I’m glad that we won,”

the forward said.

This is the most important thing, but again the result is good… We came to fight today, we won. It’s good, but sometimes we’ve come to fight and we will not win. But still we’re focusing on ourselves and continuing the process.

D.C. United’s approach blended disciplined defending with moments of creativity, setting a determined tone for the season. Baribo also shared insights on their strategy:

“It’s something that we’ve worked on in training and it’s something that the coach wants us to do, to counter the attack,”

he explained.

When someone is dribbling, someone needs to go behind, and then there are options. Maybe we’ll go along or give me the opportunity.

Strong Defensive Performances Highlight Team Effort

Midfielder Matti Pelota played a key role in managing the midfield, completing 84% of his passes and making seven defensive recoveries, which helped disrupt Philadelphia’s offensive flow and connected defense to attack effectively. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Sean Johnson made his debut with D.C. United, earning a clean sheet by stopping three shots over the full 90 minutes and organizing the back line confidently against a historically challenging opponent.

Johnson expressed optimism about the team’s future after the game:

“I think today was the first step for us,”

he said.

We just wanted to create a solid foundation, a solid defensive lead, and obviously we had chances to move forward but I think we did both. So it’s a group that’s hungry to get better. It sounds cliché, but from day one of preseason that’s been our M.O. [modus operandi].

The late arrival of defender Nikola Markovic, who entered as a stoppage-time substitute for his MLS debut, highlighted the club’s focus on building depth within the squad, signaling promising development for the team’s rotation and future matches.

Building Momentum and Team Identity for the Season Ahead

This victory not only extended D.C. United’s unbeaten run at Audi Field but also infused the squad and supporters with confidence as they aim to carry this momentum into the upcoming months. Securing three points early in the campaign is vital, but the growing belief in their playing style and cohesion is equally significant.

General Manager René Wiler commented on the team’s progress and vision:

“This is what we are doing,”

he said.

We are trying to build our own culture and our own identity. That’s what we started. And that was just a small step for me. It’s not like a big thing in my opinion. It’s just one step moving forward to build that culture, to build that identity and just get better every day.

Wiler also acknowledged the long-term nature of their journey:

“It’s every day we have this culture, the winning mentality that only through winning, we can win everyone back,”

he explained.

Our fans, our staff, everyone will come back to Audi Field. And it’s a long journey, we know that, we accept that. We’re not saying that it will happen overnight. I want you to see that today is just the beginning from that. It’s not like the end of the road, so it’s very important to know that.

D.C. United to Host Historic Match in Baltimore

Expanding its regional presence, D.C. United will host the reigning 2025 MLS champions, Inter Miami CF, on March 7 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, marking the first Major League Soccer match ever held at that venue. This strategic move aims to broaden the club’s fan base beyond Washington, embracing Baltimore as an extended home and leveraging the stadium’s status as a premier sporting venue.

Danita Johnson, the club’s president of business operations, described the significance of this matchup:

This match represents a pivotal moment for our club, and every step we’ve taken has been guided by what our supporters deserve,

she stated.

Bringing this match to Baltimore is not just a venue change. It is a meaningful step to embracing Baltimore as part of our home fan base. It is also an incredible opportunity to help grow the sport in a market that has consistently shown tremendous passion for soccer. M&T Bank Stadium is no stranger to hosting world-class matches, and we’re grateful to the Baltimore Ravens for welcoming us and helping make this match possible.

With its natural grass field and a rich history of major sporting events, M&T Bank Stadium offers D.C. United a significant stage for a high-profile encounter.

Outlook on the Season’s Growth and Next Challenges

The opening win and the emergence of key players, alongside the addition of an experienced goalkeeper and expansion into a new regional market, all point to a season centered on renewal and advancement. The team has laid a foundation in their home opener, but sustaining progress will require continuous effort and resilience as they face increasing challenges throughout the MLS season.

This campaign represents a decisive chapter for D.C. United, balancing hopeful anticipation with the understanding that success develops through steady improvement.
