Josh Sargent Reveals Why He Chose MLS Over Europe

On February 27, Josh Sargent officially completed his transfer to Toronto FC, marking a significant move away from European football to Major League Soccer. The USMNT forward’s decision to join the MLS underscores his desire to return closer to home and focus on his family life after several seasons abroad.

Sargent’s transition to Toronto FC followed a period of tension with his former club Norwich City. Since January, the 26-year-old striker had been eager to make the switch but had not played for Norwich since then. He notably chose to miss a January FA Cup match against Blackburn by informing the manager via text, signaling his intent to move on. Norwich City, competing in the EFL Championship, resisted his transfer during the winter window, which prevented earlier movement.

Challenges and Considerations Ahead of MLS Move

Although clubs like Wrexham and Fulham showed interest in acquiring Sargent, they could not reach an agreement with Norwich City. Ultimately, Toronto FC secured his services for a reported base fee of $22 million, potentially rising to $27 million with add-ons. This transfer is expected to bring Sargent into a new competitive environment as he prepares to make his MLS debut.

Before entering professional football in Europe, Sargent’s youth career began in the United States, spanning local St. Louis clubs and the IMG Academy, followed by a move to Werder Bremen’s youth setup in 2018. This background highlights his steady football development from the U.S. to Europe and now back to North America.

Family Priorities Drove His Return to North America

In an interview with GOAL, Josh Sargent revealed that his choice to leave Europe was closely tied to personal reasons, particularly family considerations. After spending years away, the striker wanted to be nearer to his loved ones and to build a family life in North America.

He expressed frustration with external judgments about his decision, saying,

“It’s nobody else’s life. I don’t know, but I feel like a lot of people have had their say on whether it’s the right thing to do or this and that. Again, there are a lot of people out there, and you’re not judging their lives for what they choose. I’m at a time where, over the last year or so, I’ve been thinking about coming back closer to home because I’m having more kids.”

Sargent also emphasized the appeal of Toronto FC’s vision and the structured plan they presented for his future at the club:

“It’s been more and more attractive to me and my family. The opportunity with Toronto came up, and they seemed to have a clear plan and structure for what they want to do. Everything just sounded exciting to me, and it all lined up perfectly, so here we are.”

Upcoming Debut and Potential Impact in MLS

Josh Sargent is anticipated to make his first appearance for Toronto FC soon, possibly during their upcoming match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. This MLS debut represents a new chapter for him professionally and personally, as he reintegrates into North American soccer.

His move also raises questions about how this shift will influence his role in the USMNT setup, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching. As a striker with international experience in Germany’s Bundesliga and England’s Championship, Sargent’s return to MLS brings both promise and scrutiny regarding his future performances and development.

The transfer could signal increasing MLS ambitions to attract established American talent back from Europe, strengthening the league’s profile ahead of major international tournaments. For Sargent, the decision reflects a balance between career objectives and family priorities, a nuanced choice that resonates with many athletes contemplating their next steps.
