16-Year-Old Cavan Sullivan Sets New MLS Scoring Record

At just 16 years old, Cavan Sullivan has made headlines as the youngest American to score in the Concacaf Champions Cup, marking a milestone early in his professional soccer career with the Philadelphia Union. His standout performance came on Thursday night during a 7-0 victory against Defense Force FC in the regional tournament that parallels Europe’s UEFA Champions League.

Record-Breaking Night Highlights Sullivan’s Growing Impact

Sullivan’s breakthrough included two goals and two assists, showcasing his skill and composure well beyond his years. His opening goal was a powerful left-foot strike, making him the third-youngest scorer ever in the Concacaf Champions Cup at 16 years, 4 months, and 29 days. He then capped the match with a late tap-in in the 88th minute after initiating the play himself.

Philadelphia Union’s coach Bradley Carnell reflected on the young star’s progress, stating,

“It’s another moment in the right direction.”

Sullivan acknowledged the significance of his achievement, saying,

“It took a long time in my eyes. I wish I had it sooner. This is a special moment.”

He also expressed his excitement after scoring, remarking,

“Happy to score my first goal, two of them, actually. It was pretty special. More important is the clean sheet in the win and we advance.”

Historic Debut and Future Prospects for Sullivan

Before this scoring record, Sullivan had already set an earlier milestone by becoming the youngest player to appear in any major North American professional sports league at 14 years, 293 days, making his debut for the Union in July 2024. His rapid rise has attracted significant attention across MLS and beyond, with expectations of a future transfer to the English Premier League’s Manchester City once he turns 18 in 2027.

At 5-foot-7 and weighing 150 pounds, Sullivan previously led the United States to its first-ever victory in the 2023 Concacaf Under-15 Championship, earning the tournament’s Golden Ball as its best player after scoring four goals. He continues to deliver consistent performances for the Union as they prepare for their MLS home opener against New York City FC on Sunday.

Reflecting on his early impact in the league, Sullivan said,

“I think I’ve sort of made some good impact when I came in. At this level, things get faster, things get harder.”

Philadelphia Union Advances with Eyes on Next Challenge

With their 7-0 win and an aggregate score of 12-0 over two legs—including a 5-0 victory in Trinidad and Tobago in February—the Philadelphia Union have firmly secured their place in the Concacaf Champions Cup’s next round, where they will face the Mexican powerhouse Club América. This dominant showing underscores both the team’s strength and Sullivan’s emerging role as a key contributor to their success.
