Born in Michigan and raised in Ohio, he grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood where cultural connections were scarce, yet he rose above these challenges with determination and hard work.
Academic Excellence and Family Influence
Eneli was the first member of his family to attend an Ivy League school, graduating from Cornell University in 2022 with a major in Biological Engineering and a minor in Business. His family’s emphasis on education played a critical role in shaping his ambitions and achievements. Coming from a family of high achievers, including a father who is an engineer and a mother who is a doctor, Eneli was constantly encouraged to pursue excellence both inside and outside the classroom.
“I moved to Columbus…and at least through third grade I was the only Black person in my elementary school,” Eneli recounted. “You had to excel even more for people to look at you the same,” crediting social pressure along with the prestigious education of his family.
“They always had high expectations for me education-wise,” Eneli said. “So I aimed highly in that regard.”
Leadership and Collegiate Soccer Highlights
During his time at Cornell, Eneli demonstrated strong leadership as captain of the soccer team through his junior and senior years. Over four seasons, he played in 60 matches, scored 20 goals, and contributed 17 assists. His performances earned him placements on the All-Ivy League First Team and Second Team in 2021. Eneli also helped Cornell reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen—a milestone the team had not achieved in nearly three decades—showcasing his impact on the field and his rising soccer legacy.
Honoring Black Trailblazers and Heritage
Eneli draws inspiration from prominent Black figures such as Jackie Robinson, the first African-American Major League Baseball player, and Ruby Bridges, the first African-American child to attend a formerly all-white school. Their courage and determination serve as powerful motivators in his own life and career.
“Ruby Bridges…her perseverance to get through that is really impressive,” Eneli shared. “It seems like it was a long time ago, but it really wasn’t that long ago.”
His connection to his Nigerian roots also plays a crucial role in his success. Eneli’s parents emigrated from Nigeria in their mid-twenties, building demanding careers while adapting to life in a new country. Their example of perseverance and hard work has deeply influenced Eneli’s approach to both his athletic and personal endeavors.
“You really have to have perseverance and hard work,” he shared. “And they learned that in Nigeria and brought that with them…so I’ve had that stick with me on and off the field, and in everything that I do.”
Balancing Expectations with Self-Acceptance
While striving for excellence, Eneli acknowledges the pressure of perfection and emphasizes the importance of realism and personal growth. His reflections offer encouragement especially for young people who may feel unnoticed or overwhelmed by expectations.
“I think I tried to be perfect all the time, but you can’t be perfect all the time,” Eneli said. “I don’t think you should try to aim to be perfect—just try to be the best person that you can be.”
Professional Impact and Future Aspirations
Since joining Real Salt Lake in 2023, Eneli has steadily distinguished himself as a dependable midfielder, accumulating 82 appearances and 63 starts. Along with one goal and four assists, his influence goes beyond statistics as he continues to contribute to the team’s dynamics and successes. As he looks toward his fourth season with the Claret and Cobalt, Eneli’s ongoing commitment reflects his desire to build on his many accomplishments and shape a lasting legacy both on and off the field.
