Prince Owusu Leads CF Montreal to 3-0 Win Over Red Bulls

On Sunday in Harrison, N.J., CF Montreal defeated the New York Red Bulls 3-0, powered by Prince Owusu’s penalty kick and two goals from Wiki Carmona. Owusu’s successful penalty in the 8th minute marked Montreal’s first goal of the season, following a foul drawn by Iván Jaime on Red Bulls defender Justin Che.

Wiki Carmona Extends Lead with Two Unassisted Goals

Before halftime, Carmona increased Montreal’s advantage with a free kick goal in the 44th minute, scoring unassisted. He then capped the match in the 68th minute by stealing the ball and scoring another solo goal. Carmona, previously with the Red Bulls for five seasons and 102 appearances, had scored six goals during his time with the club but did not find the net last season in 21 starts.

Strong Defensive Performance and First Clean Sheet for Montreal

Montreal goalkeeper Thomas Gillier recorded five saves, securing his first clean sheet in 11 career starts after conceding eight goals over the first two games this season. Meanwhile, New York’s Ethan Horton made one save in his third MLS start, following a clean sheet in the Red Bulls’ previous 1-0 win against the New England Revolution.

Youthful Red Bulls Lineup and Historical Context

New York started three teenagers—Julian Hall (17), Adri Mehmeti (16), and Matthew Dos Santos (17)—for the third consecutive match. Under first-year head coach Michael Bradley, the Red Bulls aimed for an unprecedented three straight wins to open the season, but were held scoreless in this game. Montreal’s interim head coach Marco Donadel earned his first victory after taking over last season when the club finished 13th and missed the playoffs.

Upcoming Fixtures for Both Sides

The Red Bulls will face Toronto FC on Saturday, seeking to bounce back on the road. Montreal continues their challenging schedule with an away match against Orlando City the same day, marking the fourth of six consecutive road games to start their campaign.
