Shane van Gisbergen has made significant progress in enhancing his oval racing techniques in 2025 while continuing to showcase his exceptional road course driving abilities. His commitment validates why Justin Marks invested in establishing a full-time seat for him in the NASCAR Cup Series. However, the rigorous schedule of the Cup Series leaves Van Gisbergen with little opportunity to compete in other racing events.
In a December interview with Speedcafe, Van Gisbergen revealed his desire to explore different racing disciplines, but the demanding 37 to 38 weeks spent racing in the NASCAR Cup Series restricts those possibilities. By the time the American season wraps up, the motorsport calendar in Australia and New Zealand, where he would ideally like to participate, is already closed.
Despite this, Van Gisbergen hopes to take part in some races back in New Zealand during 2026.
I’d love to go do some races there, and you know, cuz it’s pretty shut down here in America this time of year,
he explained.
The winters are harsh, and I would love to get home and spend more time in the summer. [It] would be good.
When asked about competing in the 24 Hours of Daytona or the Chili Bowl during the offseason, he firmly declined.

Although he had a promising chance to enter the 24 Hours of Daytona, Van Gisbergen chose to forgo it, citing how physically and mentally demanding that period is and his desire to dedicate his full effort to Trackhouse Racing. While this limitation can be frustrating, he remains positive about the situation.
Van Gisbergen Embraces the Challenging NASCAR Grind
Last year, Van Gisbergen spent 36 consecutive weeks racing, during which he clinched five wins before finally taking a well-earned break. It’s understandable that he would feel drained after such an exhaustive stretch.
Yet, despite the exhaustion, Van Gisbergen enjoys the demanding nature of his routine.
I think I had a week and a half where I was like, ‘Yep, get some energy back.’ It was good to relax and then I’m now I’m being bored,
he said.
You know, I don’t really have much racing planned or much to do. I redid my garage and did a bit around home in the sim room and stuff. I’m like, ‘What do I do now?’ Like, I really love the racing here and love the routine of it, but also the variety.
He emphasized how the mix of racing on different kinds of tracks and being involved in pre-race preparation keeps the season interesting. The structured routine has grown on him, and he looks forward to adding a few more wins to make next year’s campaign even more exciting.
Looking Ahead: What the Future Holds for Van Gisbergen
Shane van Gisbergen’s commitment to the NASCAR Cup Series illustrates the intense demands of competing at the highest level. While it restricts opportunities for other racing pursuits, his focus remains on building momentum with Trackhouse Racing. His eagerness to race in New Zealand in 2026 shows a desire to reconnect with his roots and maintain versatility.
With only a limited number of breaks during the year, Van Gisbergen’s physical and mental endurance will be tested, but his enjoyment of the grind and competitive spirit suggest he is well prepared for the challenge. As he continues to adapt and thrive, his growing list of victories may soon widen, potentially cementing his status within NASCAR and beyond.
