Denny Hamlin to Race Despite Aggravated Shoulder Injury

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin announced on Wednesday that he has aggravated a shoulder injury but will continue racing as the new NASCAR Cup Series season approaches. The 45-year-old competitor shared this update during a news conference held just hours before the snow-delayed Cook Out Clash preseason event at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Hamlin Faces Personal and Professional Challenges

Hamlin’s announcement follows a difficult end to 2023, marked by both emotional and career struggles. He narrowly missed claiming his first NASCAR Cup Series championship in a dramatic finish on November 2. That race held special significance as he aimed to honor his father, Dennis Hamlin, who was unwell at the time. Tragically, Dennis died on December 28 in a house fire that also injured his wife, Mary Lou, Denny’s mother.

Injury Details and Impact on Season Preparation

Hamlin explained that his shoulder problems originated before the recent fall he experienced while searching through the remnants of his parents’ home after the fire. He had previously undergone surgery on the shoulder in November 2023. Hamlin recognized the urgency due to the limited time for surgery and recovery before the Cup Series kickoff, deciding to continue racing despite lingering pain.

So I’m gonna have to go the rest of the season the way I was before there,

Hamlin stated.

I don’t think that it ever healed properly. Just noticed some issues, really kind of right after the season. It just was nagging me a little bit. Took a little fall at my mom’s house, going through all the rubble and stuff and just didn’t feel right. Got it re-scanned and re-tore it again.

Hamlin Returns to Competition with Determination and Caution

After the season finale in Phoenix Raceway, Hamlin had expressed the need to focus on recovery rather than racing, saying,

I don’t even think about the race car right now. Just yeah, I’m gonna need some time on this one.

Nevertheless, he has returned to the track Wednesday with his Joe Gibbs Racing team for The Clash, a non-points event he has won four times, demonstrating his resolve to compete despite ongoing physical difficulties.

Looking Ahead: Endurance and Recovery on the Road

Hamlin’s decision to race through the season with an aggravated shoulder injury underscores the challenges athletes face balancing health and competition. His resilience in the face of personal loss and physical setbacks will be closely watched as the NASCAR season unfolds. This story is set to be updated as more information becomes available.
