Kyle Busch Breaks Silence on Tough Love with Son Brexton

Kyle Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, recently opened up about his approach to mentoring his son, Brexton Busch, a promising young racer. The 10-year-old Brexton is making strides in junior racing circuits, with his father heavily invested in nurturing his talent. After a video of Kyle reviewing one of Brexton’s races surfaced on social media and sparked debate over the veteran’s candid coaching style, Busch explained that his critiques are part of their usual process.

Busch shared that this type of honest, straightforward feedback is common between them.

“Well, I mean, we do that all the time. I think that was probably one of the first times we’ve ever really broadcasted it. I tried to be nice, but I tried to be—not forceful. The word would be just to the point, right? Like trying to get it out there,”

he said in an interview with Jonathan Ramos via X.

The veteran driver acknowledged that, at times, Brexton tends to blame external factors such as car performance instead of accepting responsibility for his actions on the track. Kyle emphasized that this honest feedback is meant to help his son grow as a racer by recognizing his own areas for improvement.

“You know, he wants to sometimes complain too much about the car’s not there or this or that or whatever. And I’m like, ‘Look, this one’s on you. This one’s your fault.’ But he’s 10, he’s learning, and he’s doing a really good job. I mean, last night we had the capability of maybe running third. We got a sixth out of it,”

Busch added.

In the video, Kyle explained the importance of executing a race consistently from start to finish and meeting the goals they set as a team. He believes these incremental achievements will build Brexton’s confidence and racing skills over time.

“So just telling him he’s got to execute and do his job all day from beginning to end. And wherever we line up, we’ll say, ‘Yeah man, we met the goal for the day.’ So, you’re going out and winning that race — we know that was pretty cool — but were you able to take some of that?”

he stated.

Kyle Busch Considers Competing Against Brexton in Late Model Racing

When asked about the possibility of racing directly against his son in a Late Model event, similar to the father-son battles of Kevin and Keelan Harvick, Kyle Busch expressed openness to the idea. He fondly reflected on his own early racing career in the Late Model summer series, highlighting iconic races such as the Snowball Derby, Winchester 400, and Oxford 250, which hold great significance for him.

I never say never. I love the late model world. That’s kind of where my favorite times of being a race car driver came from. So, winning the Snowball Derbies, the Winchester 400s, the Oxford 250s — those are all great big races that you want to win as a late model racer.
Kyle Busch said.

Kyle expects Brexton to move into the Late Model series in the next few years as he becomes a teenager. However, running both father and son concurrently would require substantial financial backing and sponsorship, as supporting two cars is costly.

“I’m sure Brexton will be doing that here shortly in the next few years. And I don’t know if I want to pay for two of us to be out there. So, I’m sure we’ll focus on him and see what I want to dabble in,”

Busch commented.

Implications for Brexton’s Future and the Busch Racing Legacy

This candid insight into Kyle Busch’s coaching philosophy and plans for his son illustrates the deliberate approach the veteran racer is taking to shape Brexton’s racing career. By balancing tough feedback with clear developmental goals, Kyle aims to equip his son with the skills and mindset necessary for success in competitive motorsports. As Brexton continues to develop under the guidance of his experienced father, the racing world will be watching to see how their partnership evolves.

The potential for a father-versus-son Late Model showdown also adds an exciting narrative to Brexton’s career progression and Kyle’s ongoing involvement in grassroots racing series. Should sponsorship and scheduling align, fans may witness the Busch family name competing side by side in high-profile developmental races, further cementing their legacy in the sport.

As Brexton grows into a promising young racer under Kyle’s wing, the combination of mentorship, tough yet constructive coaching, and gradual progression into advanced series promises to make their story one to follow in the years ahead.
